Loom Room
Handwoven fabrics and home wares hand woven in New Zealand using quality NZ fibres. Small run fabrics and one off pieces. Plus beautiful heirloom baby blankets.
From shawls and scarves to tea towels and throws. Loom Room, embracing 'Slow fashion'.
Another recent throw, just off the loom. Made from posdum/cashmere/silk blend. Super soft and warm, I could live all day wrapped in this one...
Classic cream and tan neutral, again, playing with pattern variations, had fun making this one!

Are you ready for winter yet? From loom to body... natural neutrals blended with red, and a touch of coral in soft possum yarn. I had fun playing with this colour pallet and varying the texture of the weave to make an unrepeatable piece. I wanted to invoke a toasty, warm feeling as the cooler weather of autumn settles into winter. Cosy up under this possum throw with a good book anyone?
For Sale: 54" Mecchia, Dobby Loom. Located in Whangarei. Not my loom, and I have never used a dobby, but Mecchia is a very good brand of New Zealand made loom and I can offer assurance of quality.
If anyone is interested in buying this loom, please message me and I'll put you in touch with the seller.
It will need to be collected from Whangarei.
Looking good in concrete....
Pouring of the final section of flooring in the shed... finally!!! Can't say I'll be sad to have finished.

Dolphin display on the Thames Coast this morning. Magic!
My dog trying to tell me he is more interesting than my phone.... he's not entirely wrong!
Wet weekend weaving...

This weaver's heaven 😍
Warm dark honey gold... new warp on the loom; two shawls only. One in same honey colour, the other with a hand spun blend with touches of purple and lilac. Looking forward to weaving this lovely possom/cashmere/silk blend!
No access to proper tools? No worries, kitchen furniture will do!...
Sometimes we have to improvise. I had to make a warp and did not have access to my warping mill. A few kitchen chairs were repurposed to improvise one. A bit slower than having real tools, but did the job 😍

Loving the way these leek flower heads are bursting forth!
Bad day on the tools...
Went from frequent broken threads to the warp disintegrating when I tightened it one click too many... 4 hours slow, painful work today, down the drain!!! Oh well, off to walk the dogs....
Some weaving days are frustrating.... each pin in this picture is a broken thread. Takes time to stop, repair, then mend later. Bad enough getting one break every now and again; very frustrating having 6 within 20cm!!!!
Ever wanted to have a go at tapestry weaving? I have put together a pdf with instructions on how to make a simple cardboard loom in your own home. I have included links to various YouTube tutorials for a range of different tapestry techniques and pointers.
It is free to download from my website, www.loomroom.co.nz.
Get stuck in, be creative, and most of all, have fun!
Hand dyed wool to hand spun weft. Ferny greens, shot with golds, touches of purple and deeper shades of green. Finished weaving this shawl yesterday, looks amazing! Still needs washing and pressing before its finished, but nearly there!
Stormy night.... I've been playing with resist dying techniques recently. I wanted narrow bands of white pulling through a base of black. I had in my mind an image of sheets of rain falling on a stormy night. The finished result somewhat achieves that I think! And I wanted to show the tangled mess I started with after the dye process!
Late afternoon sun casting warm shadows over the shawl I finished weaving this afternoon....
Ever wondered how I get 576 threads all the same several meters long without getting into a tangled, snarled mess?
This tool is how....
Using my warping mill to measure 576 warps all 8 meters long.
Can't wait to weave this beautiful mossy, olive green possum/cashmere yarn. One scarf on special order, plus two shawls for my loomroom.co.nz store. One shawl will be all the same green and the other will be a unique one-off with a handspun weft in complimentary tones. Can't wait to weave!
The only part of the process requiring electricity....
(Leave sound off). I use an electric drill to wind the bobbins that feed the weft into the flying shuttle.
Winter storm: tying on a new warp. Calling this first shawl winter storm because the resist dyed blocks of white I hope will look like rain drops sheeting down on a wet, stormy night... I'll post more progress shots as I go!
The finished peacock blue shawl... same painted merino wool warp as the green, but with the gorgeous blue weft, a camel/merino blend. Such lightness! Such warmth! Such softness.....
The finished peacock green shawl. Painted merino wool warp - three different shades of blue and greens, and then woven with a spring green weft which is a gorgeous blend of NZ possum, cashmere and silk.
Ohh, I love this part! Unwinding the end product is so satisfying and exciting! In this case, the two 'peacock' shawls i made last weekend, one predominantly blue and the other spring green. The yarn i used is so fine, they are almost transparent!
I'll post images after they are mended, washed and pressed soon.
Flying shuttle loom in action. Weaving the second of two shawls last weekend in this video. I thought it might interest some people who haven't ever seen my loom in action before!

The satisfaction of pulling off a completed shawl, and on a wet and wild Wellington day, the vibrant peacock blue just makes me feel happy!

Getting knotted with 576 new warp threads to be tied one by one onto warps from previous project. This stunning peacock blue will be a fabulous shawl when finished tomorrow 💙.
