CS Wellington College, 2nd XI vs CS Wellington College, 1st XI Powered by My Action Replay
The Wellington College 2nd XI had their first home game for the 2020 season against Rongotai College 1st XI on the Coll No. 1, and expectations were running high after a win the week before. WC lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, and although would have preferred to bat, got into their work enthusiastically. Making use of the new ball was Toby Cook and Jago Sperring, taking one wicket each to make some early inroads into the Rongotai batting lineup. From here though, Rongotai were able to put WC's bowlers under some pressure, working singles and putting the bad ball away on what was a lightening fast outfield. Marco Muollo had other ideas, taking two quick wickets to dismiss Rongotai's two best batsmen and opening the door for us to put them under the pump. From here on in it was the Willem Oppenhuis show, who cleaned up the Rongotai middle and lower order in brutal fashion. The Rongotai batsmen had no answer to his full, straight, potent display of fast bowling. Willem finished with a well deserved five-fa. Paddy Martin took the last wicket of the Rongotai innings to leave them all out for 95. Matt McCallum was superb behind the stumps all day, and finished with four catches. Due to the early finish of the first innings, it was a ten minute turn around before WC went out to bat. Despite an early wicket due to a dubious LBW call, Matt McCallum and Will Greenwood set about their work in clinical fashion, rotating the strike and sending loose balls to the boundary in their 91 run partnership, guiding the Wellington College 2nd XI home to victory in 16.5 overs with nine wickets still in hand. It was a match that contained many pleasing aspects for WC 2nd XI, and they now look ahead to next week's top of the table clash with the Wellington College 1st XI.
