Sixteen-year-old Ethan, who is neurodivergent, undertook his Active in HELL (AiH) training at HELL Cuba Street in Wellington. His dream is to run his own business – and, to do that, it helps to understand how successful businesses are run, which is one reason why AiH has been so useful for him.

AiH is a paid training scheme run through HELL Pizza stores nationwide, with support from IHC New Zealand. It teaches young adults with intellectual disabilities the practical skills required to thrive in a commercial kitchen and the responsibility of having a job and working as part of a team.

In terms of practical skills, Ethan says: “It was good to learn how to do things like chop tomatoes and understand how to use knives and other equipment safely.”

Pride Lands mentor Nicholas Penman also supported Ethan through his training. He says his mentee’s communication improved considerably during the six-week programme: “This was a big step in his journey towards adulthood, and I know that Ethan is super grateful for the opportunity.”

HELL Cuba Street manager Dan Patel has welcomed three AiH graduates to the store and says he and his staff have taken a lot of value from each experience 🍕🖤

2-year-old Temiti spent the first six months of his life in hospital with multiple congenital health conditions. Temiti requires breathing and feeding support, has vision and hearing issues, severe hypotonia (decreased muscle tone) and is currently non-mobile.

“The government doesn’t seem to care about the parents of disabled children,” she says. “Finding support has been really difficult".

Temiti loves anything related to lights and movement, so Satan’s Little Helper hooked him up with an Ocean Projector that displays moving lights and images for him to follow with his eyes and hands.

“It’s great for him to have something to get his attention that’s not a screen. He can also follow the projections with his hands, which has helped his coordination" 🍕🖤

Three-year-old Jaxon was born with a genetic condition called Townes-Brocks syndrome, which results in almost complete deafness in one ear and partial deafness in the other. He was also born with kidney disease and hypothyroidism. His hearing problems have delayed his verbal development.

“Even though he’s deaf in one ear and essentially deaf in the other, he isn’t bad enough in both ears to receive funding for a cochlear implant, so we’re just taking it one day at the time.” Says mum, Rachel.

As he’s smaller in stature compared to other children his age, Jaxon struggles to pluck up the courage to join them in play.

To help Jaxon build balance, coordination, strength and confidence with his peers, Satan’s Little Helper provided Jaxon with a climbing foam play set with a ball pit! Rochelle says it has made an immediate impact 🍕🖤

Two-and-a-half-year-old Alayna suffers from a range of complications caused by a rare genetic disorder called CACNA1A. She battles cerebral palsy, low muscle tone, global development delay and eye movement disorder as a result. Despite it all, her mum Nicole says she’s a “joyful little girl who touches the soul of anyone in her presence”.

She has to go through vigorous physical therapy to try and help her become more mobile so she can keep up with her two older sisters, which she works hard at.

Satan’s Little Helper wanted to do something that would bring Alayna some comfort in the here and now, so we got her a sensory swing! Nicole says she has instantly taken to it and that it has also been beneficial for her eldest, Aria, who is on the sensory processing disorder spectrum 🍕🖤

12-year-old Toby has autism, ADHD, and a rare lung disease doctors can't get to the bottom of. Frequent surgeries to widen his airways limit his activity, and he has trouble spending time with friends.

His mum, Kate, also battling lung disease, says the mainstream school was overwhelming for Toby, but moving to a new school improved his mental health and confidence.

4-year-old Zoey is a courageous little girl living with spinal muscular atrophy. Despite an early diagnosis, her health worsened quickly. With some medications for it being unavailable in New Zealand, it's been a long battle for Zoey's family to get her the right treatment. However, she is now a year into her journey with Nusinersen, also known as Spinraza. Every four months Zoey has had to go under general anaesthetic via a lumbar puncture, but her mum Chauntel says it's been worth it!

7-year-old Cooper was born with a rare genetic condition called Coffin-Siris syndrome that makes the world a very overwhelming place. His low-muscle tone means he uses a wheelchair, he's non-verbal and also hypersensitive to touch, sound, water and sometimes light. All of this means him and his family understandably find it difficult to get out and about.

His mum Alanna says that although things are can be hard for Cooper and the family, his 'cheeky smile' can always brighten their day and he's taught them to be more empathetic to others.

4-year-old Ellazae's life changed after a routine doctor appointment turned into a week in hospital and a type 1 diabetes diagnosis.

Since then, life has changed rapidly as Ellazae and her mum, Kimberly, learn how to control her diet and lifestyle. Kimberly explains that it was a hard transition for Ellazae as she had to miss out on a lot and deal with a lot of needles and finger prick tests.

But now, a couple of months down the line, Ellazae is fitted with a continuous glucose monitor and is managing her blood sugar levels a lot better. Another thing that is helping her is regular exercise, and since she loves playing outside, Satan’s Little Helper gifted Ellazae a new bike! 🚲✨
