Sensory specific immunisations!

We have increased capacity and an extra date for our Autism Resource Centre vaccination clinics in Petone, Wellington.

The dates are:
First dose: 11th or 12th September 2021
Second dose: Sunday 24th October 2021

Who is eligible?
Any one aged 12 years and over who would benefit from being vaccinated in a lower-sensory space with longer appointment times. The Autism Resource Centre is a purpose-built space with a range of sensory equipment, quiet spaces and supports in place. Appointment times will be longer than a standard vaccination appointment, and Autism NZ staff will be on hand to help. While this is an Autism NZ event, any disabled person who would benefit is welcome to book.

Parents, caregivers and whānau can also book in to be vaccinated at the same time. Please note you need to make an appointment for every person being vaccinated. This includes children aged 12-15.

How to Book
When booking, state that you want to attend the Autism NZ event. You can book via phone, text or email.

If you have already received your first dose at the Autism Resource Centre, you are already booked in to receive your second dose on the 11th or 12th of September. Please check your vaccination card if you are unsure of your appointment time.

Spaces are limited, so book as soon as possible.

The clinic will be going ahead at all alert levels. Masks should be worn by those who are able (exemptions are accepted) and social distancing will be in place at appropriate alert levels.

For those in other areas of New Zealand, we understand that there is a need and desire for similar clinics. This clinic is possible for two reasons: we have a purpose-built space in Wellington, and the local DHB has supported this event. Autism NZ does not have the same resources nationwide, and each DHB is responsible for the rollout in their region. If you would benefit from extra support during your vaccination appointment, you can indicate this during the booking process at https://bookmyvaccine.covid19.health.nz/

Autism NZ is proud to be offering an autism-specific vaccination event from our resource centre in Petone, Wellington. Autistic individuals with high support needs will be able to receive their COVID-19 vaccination in our purpose-built space, with extended appointment times and support from Autism NZ staff.

When:
Dose 1: 14/08/2021 and 15/08/2021 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM
Dose 2 (automatic follow-up booking): 11/09/2021 and 12/09/2021 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM

Where:
Autism NZ Resource Centre, 20 Sydney Street, Petone, Lower Hutt, Wellington 5012

As numbers are limited, the two vaccination days offered at Autism NZ are specifically for autistic people who would struggle to be vaccinated at other locations. This includes people with very high support needs, people who need extended time in a safe and low sensory space before, during or after the vaccine, or those who face other significant barriers to being vaccinated at other locations. Accompanying support people are also eligible to be vaccinated at the same event.

At the Autism NZ vaccination event, we will provide:
- Extended appointment times
- Autism NZ staff to assist you on the day
- A chance to come in and familiarise yourself prior to vaccination (see drop-in information, below)
- Quiet spaces and sensory tools
- Social stories and autism-specific information
- Clear signs and instructions to make your visit as simple as possible

Resource Centre Drop Ins:
We will hold two drop-in days prior to the vaccination event. These will be to view and become familiar with the space. These will take place on:
THURSDAY 5TH AUGUST FROM 12-4PM and
FRDIAY 6TH AUGUST FROM 9.30AM-12PM

Anyone booked into the vaccination event is welcome to attend and have a tour of the space at any time within these hours, collect social stories and other resources, discuss support needs, or spend some time in the centre as needed.

The Wellington DHB will be offering other low-sensory vaccination events for those who still require some support. We will create a separate post with those details – keep an eye on the page for updates. This term we have our Emotional Skills sessions running
Where we work on our self-esteem, emotional awareness, communication, and build friendships all at the same time!

We are also running teen scene sessions (and (pr***en)) where we hit all the same issues as our emotional skills group does but we add in the compounding world elements (tech, texting, stress, pressure, media... and so much more!) and help your growing YHs navigate those years with real-world tactics and skills.
