📢 In the latest episode of the pro clima podcast, Simon Cator sits down with Steve Hughes from Build Good Architecture who takes us through his journey from living in a renovated 1860s villa in Ponsonby, Auckland, to building an off-grid Passive House in Coromandel.

Steve shares with Simon his first-hand experiences of living in an old villa, highlighting its poor heat retention, high energy costs, and overall discomfort. This pushed him to explore the benefits of constructing a new passive home, where he delves into the critical aspects of energy efficiency, airtightness, and thermal performance.

Throughout the conversation, Steve offers valuable insights from his hands-on experience, encouraging others to embrace sustainable building practices—whether it's in new constructions, smaller dwellings, or retrofitting existing structures.

Jon elaborates on his Master's thesis, which explores the application of Parka Wrap - retrofitting insulation onto existing walls.

Jon is a huge advocate for continuous advancement and innovation in building & construction practices to enhance the quality and efficiency of buildings, thus benefiting the health of their occupants!

"I hope we'll see a change in the outcome for renovation work which has energy modelling and predicted energy demand for that building - for any building - in play during the design process; and then just put some minimums around that."

The pro clima Podcast host Simon Cator recently interviewed Sharon Robinson at Smart Living Spaces Architecture.

The conversation revolved around Passive House principles, the importance of energy modelling in building design to ensure comfort, health, and energy efficiency; and emphasized consulting a specialist architectural designer early in the building process for optimal outcomes and cost savings in the long term.

"Ask yourself, what is your house going to be worth in 2030. A certified Passive House is on the operating levels, energy-wise, of where we're going in 2030. So do you consider your house an investment? I think we put more consideration into the performance of the cars that we buy than we put into the houses that we are creating, and our homes are the largest financial investment that we make in our lives."

Sharon stresses the value of addressing energy efficiency and comfort with building professionals at the early stages of design.

Constructing high-performance homes from the outset is more effective than retrofitting conventional homes later, and smaller, well-performing homes can also offer greater efficiency.

Mould is one of the most common allergens!
Make a Sensitive Choice this World Allergy Week and choose an allergy friendly option.

Mould thrives in damp, humid conditions and can lurk in bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, closets and other nooks or crannies in your home. Having an indoor humidity of 55% or higher increases the risk of mould growth and development.

For some people, the tiny particles released by mould spores can trigger serious respiratory symptoms, an allergic reaction or even an asthma attack.

Our INTELLO® and INTELLO® PLUS can help prevent the impact of mould in the home. INTELLO® maximises the performance of your thermal insulation, whilst restricting internal moisture entering the building envelope - providing optimal protection against structural damage and mould.

We’re proud to have our INTELLO® and INTELLO® PLUS approved by the Sensitive Choice NZ program.
