LAYKOLD CUP CARNIVAL 18 DECEMBER
It's the big one - the Laykold Cup Carnival is on Sunday 18 December with the first race kicking off at 11am. There's graded racing throughout the day except for the main trophy races in which riders split into under 19/open/elite for the Laykold Cup 10km Scratch, masters for the Stayers Cup 8km Scratch and women for the 20 lap Poneke Plate. Juniors under the age of 17 get their own 3 lap Handicap Wheelrace.

The Laykold Cup itself is (probably) the oldest running track cycling race in the country, with the trophy first awarded in 1928. Dan Shepherd is the current holder, while Liz Steele won last year's Poneke Plate and Thomas Guldborg the Stayers Cup.

Like all in the bike industry and the Welly MTB community I’ve been shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Alex Chronis / Wombat. After watching his memorial service I was spurred to locate a rare picture of him in Lycra at the 1997 Oceania games in Whanganui. Great champion and sorely missed. RIP.
