Up close and personal with an icon of New Zealand aviation.
From 1976 the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s No.14 Squadron operated 16 BAC 167 Strikemaster Mk.88s and all pilots completed their flight training in these aircraft.
For the geeks: The Strikemaster 72 is powered by One 3410-pound thrust Rolls-Royce Viper Mk 535 turbojet and has a top speed of 518 mph. I also didn’t know it had two seats, side by side which I found super interesting!
The Strikemaster was replaced in 1992 by the Aermacchi MB339-CB.
Now, one is privately owned and located in Wellington and another is on display at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand and the others are probably spread across the globe.
Thanks to Natalya and Gary for inviting Jacinta and I to visit. Such a neat experience!
Nox and a sunset 🥹
Southern lights glow above Mana Island and Porirua.
My initial plan was to explore Wellington’s south coast and after capturing a few photos the clouds rolled in, so I gambled on heading a little further north.
The uninvited clouds significantly obstructed the view however I’m pretty happy with how these turned out!
Hope you all had a magical night ✨
The Aurora Australis is expected to be absolutely insane this evening! I’ve compiled some top tips for those in the southern hemisphere heading out to catch a glance:
📍 Face south with a good vantage point and minimal light pollution.
⏰ 6.53pm is when astronomical twilight ends and night officially begins. This is when you should be able to start capturing the lights without interference from the sun.
🧥 Wrap up warm, it’s going to be fresh. Even take a warm drink and snacks!
☁️ The forecast is for clear skies however this is Aotearoa and we know that it can all change in a second.
📷 Take the best quality camera you own. You’ll want a tripod and to be shooting a long exposure to capture colour and movement.
👀 It can take up to 20 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the darkness. Give yourself time to adjust.
🔦 Use red lights, white lights could ruin your own night vision and photos of people around you. Please be considerate.
If you’ve got any other tips, comment them below!

As the city wakes up
The resurgence of the compact camera 📸
I don’t leave the house without a few essentials and the Lumix DC-TZ220 is one of them.
Every photographer would have likely heard the quote, “the best camera is the one you have with you,” and although that might be true, relying on your phone doesn’t always cut it.
Capable of shooting RAW, 4K and equipped with a fixed Leica 24-360mm lens, the TZ220 is a little pocket rocket!
So stick to your phone, mirrorless or DSLR if you want to but for everyday photography, I’m telling you, don’t sleep on the compact.
Do you shoot with a compact camera?

Four minutes with Blindspott 📸
After an epic time filming my friends, Devilskin at Homegrown, I challenged myself to shoot Blindspott with a few restrictions:
➡️ Four minute time limit
➡️ One camera - Canon EOS R6
➡️ One lens - 50mm f/1.4
These are the results 📸
Trippy clouds ☁️

Tonight was special. I had the oppertunity to film the band I toured with when I first got my foot into photography. They took a chance on me, a young guy with a camera and tonight I got to video them after a very long break from music content creation.
It felt so good to be back. Thanks for taking another chance on that same kid who still loves this sh*t.
Even more special to continue the journey with my wife who captures content that constantly blows my mind, popping photos like this off on her phone. Man, she’ll put me out of business 😅

Let’s be honest, Rob has seen it all ⛔️☣️ Crime scene clean up isn’t glamorous but this man isn’t afraid to get it done.
I can safely say, I don’t think I’d be able to do what he does!
Good on you Rob, great to catch up mate 👊🏼

Foo Fighters 🤘🏼 Over my career I’ve photographed hundreds of concerts and the Foo Fighters at Sky Stadium last weekend was one of the most epic, enjoyable and impressive shows I’ve ever been to.
Keeping in mind, I’ve only ever been to four concerts as a patron and not a photographer, it’s nice to be able to enjoy the event without the need to take photos. But I can’t help myself, when photography and music meet, magic is made ✨
You can’t take the music photographer out of this photographer 🤘🏼📸
