Biggups to J-Kon for his new LP dropping on legendary label DSCI4.
Top Shelf Production!! 🔥

We asked J-Kon a few questions ahead of his 'Cloak The World' LP released next month.

1. How did you get into DJ'ing & producing drum & bass?

My first DNB gig I ever attended was Konflict at Studio Nine, Wellington, NZ, in 2001.

It was a natural progression from going to gigs and enjoying the vibes, to then trying to find the music, then working out how it was being played, and then finally working out how it was being produced. It was a great journey, from what I can remember! ...and I will continue this journey for as long as I can!

2. What's the scene like in New Zealand at the moment?

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what the scene is like at the moment, but I get the feeling the scene is definitely not the way it used to be! As far as Wellington goes, we lost a lot of our main DNB venues due to building closures as these buildings were prone to earthquake damage. The few gigs I have been to over the last few years were for sure not the way parties used to be 20 odd years ago!

3. How would you describe your style? Any influences that you care to mention?

I would say my general style would be deep dark funk. I love a tune with a groove and a deep and dark vibe. That said, I love all styles of DNB and love to dabble in producing everything from old school jungle to liquid funk. Some of my main influences would be Paradox, Seba, Alpha Omega, Source Direct, LTJ, Cern, Tactile, Universal Project, old C4C and Virus, old Cylon, Invaderz....

4. Who are your favourite producers in 2023?

At the moment I'm digging this chap from Finland called Park Shadow. I'm currently on a collab with him and expect something deep and dark! Others would be Dynamix, HABIT, Survey, Opalys, Verb, Release, Ricky Force.

5. What's your favourite track on DSCI4?

My all time fav DSCI4 tune would have to be Chris Su - Need U Tonite. A proper smooth mix of deep groove.

Promo mix in comments.

From Bangladesh to Billboards... sorta 😜😜

Honestly a surreal moment seeing these floating around my city. I hope these really do inspire kids that look like me to really go and get it 💪🏼 Being a musician in NZ is bloody tough. Being a Bangladeshi Musician in NZ is fkn coooooked! 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

This isn't about branding or promotion. I don't care how much publicity these generate or how many ticket sales stem from them. This poster is dedicated to every single door that ever closed on me and my brothers. This is about letting these industry cats know we're either buying the building of those doors or throwing a brick through the window next to it, to go and get the bag 💰💰

Cannot wait to kick this tour off and crush Meow this Wellington Anniversary weekend. Saturday Jan 21st, see you then! 🐯🔥

25 years ago I started my music career with a handful of vinyl records, an old rusty Numark mixer and belt drive turntables.

Throughout my life Music has helped me through mental illness and navigating the highs and lows and ebbs and flows. From the songs Mum and Dad would play at home and on road trips, to the gazals, kirtans and bhajans during pooja's and Hindu festivals and then the concerts and dance parties my friends and I experienced. Music always had a profound impact on me, encapsulating moments in time and space, becoming another form of escapism or healing.

Slowly but surely my passion for music grew in every way - live shows/concerts/dance parties, more crates of vinyl and stacks of CD's, newer and better equipment. Then came guest appearances on friends radio shows and eventually my own weekly show on Firm 107 FM (Wellington). A short while later came the regular bar and club residencies with the help of Bassdrop.co.nz (Massive thanks, love and respect to A-Tech and the Bassdrop family). It was an absolute honour to be a part of that community and to have played alongside some of the best DNB talent in NZ and now the World.

Although my parents don't quite understand my taste in music, they have always been supportive of me, but unfortunately for many ethnic artists we also carry a dark passenger that's personified by the gossip and judgement we can receive from extended family, friends and our ethnic communities, by people who simply don't have an understanding or appreciation for music and the arts.

As artists we have to walk in two worlds navigating the expectations of our culture and traditions while trying to adapt to our constantly evolving society.

All of my International DNB hero's avidly speak of the vibe, energy and appreciation shown by Kiwi crowds, Kiwi producers are internationally recognized as some of the best in the business but It broke my heart trying to live in two worlds due to the fear of judgement from the "evil eye of communal gossip"

25 years of derailments until I had the fortune of meeting a kindred spirit who reignited my passion for live music and encouraged me to reach out to the Eastern Sound Collective - A network for Asian musicians in Wellington that jam, run events and advocate for representation in the arts.

This year things came full circle, once again things started falling into place and I found a way to face the fear that's always held me back.

Big tings a gwan for 2023!

Hypersonic 5 15/08/2022

It's been a hot minute since my last mix.

This one was special, the urge to give up and walk away from it all earlier this year was tough. My work/life balance was completely discombobulated, I just couldn't find the motivation and creativity to continue but through a sympathetic ear and encouraging words I finally managed to get back on track, pick out some classics and then sift through the latest DNB offerings on Beatport to bring you this new live mix.

Enjoy!

Hypersonic 5 Take a Hypersonic flight through some classics and the freshest DNB releases on Beatport so far this year. Recorded completely Live & Direct! Featuring new music from Zero T, Break & Total Science, Digital & Outrage, Jaise, Dj Trace & Kid Drama, Presha, Seba, Nurve, LSB, Jubei and more...
