It’s Mental Health Awareness Week and this year’s theme is reconnect. Whether it's reaching out to old friends, visiting a place that's special to you or spending time outdoors, reconnecting with people and places can lift you up to enhance your pae ora (wellbeing). See below for a brief video from Umbrella’s own Dr Dougal Sutherland about the science of reconnection.
Men's Health Awareness Shave-Off Day
Friday was the day for the Men's Health Awareness Shave-Off.
These are some highlights from the morning.
We raised $1,725 in total going straight to Men's Health Trust New Zealand!
A huge thank you to Dukes Barbers for shaving everyone's beards, and Little Peckish Cafe for the coffee and muffins!
Ask your mate how he really doing. Don’t be afraid of what he might say – you don’t need to have the answers. If you have had a similar experience, tell him about it.

HealthCare NZ joins ranks of top employers
We're thrilled to be ranked New Zealand’s fourth most attractive employer in new research from recruitment company Randstad, with Chief Executive Jaimes Wood saying this reflects the company’s focus on taking care of people.
“HealthCare NZ doesn’t have a typical workplace – the majority of our 8,000 staff work in the homes of people we support, rather than an office.”
“In a sector where remuneration is often linked to legislation, we aim to attract and retain people on the strength of our work environment. “
“That means we offer flexibility, so people can balance work with the other things that are important to them, and provide a wide range of development opportunities which allow people to keep moving their careers forward.”
“HealthCare NZ is also unique in offering a wide range of rehabilitation, community health, disability support, behavioural support and nursing services, meaning our staff can diversify their work experience and learn new skills.”
“Ultimately, being ranked as New Zealand’s fourth most attractive employer is an endorsement of our focus on taking care of people – both the colleagues we work alongside, and the people we support,” Mr Wood says.

Friday chats:
Here we're talking to Gareth, who mentions that one of the struggles he has is going for a push on his wheelchair. This is because sometimes the curbs are shaped funny and so he struggles getting on and off it. What are your thoughts on this, is this something that needs to be changed?

Today, 10th of May is World Lupus Day. Every day, more than 5 million people worldwide struggle with the often debilitating health consequences of lupus, a potentially fatal autoimmune disease capable of damaging virtually any part of the body, including the skin, heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain.
Lupus affects people in all parts of the world. While some groups of people develop lupus more frequently than others, lupus develops in people of all ages, races, ethnicity and genders.
