HOSPITALITY AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS AFTER “5”
The current hospitality and small business environment has become the most difficult in living history. If like us you’re concerned, then here’s something that just might interest you.
I’m Alistair Boyce or to the industry known as “Boycie” and the Backbencher opposite Parliament in Molesworth Street is my venue. We’re known for our puppets, a tv show and great hospitality. My bar and eatery were seriously under pressure during the recent protests and when combined with “Covid” and all its restrictions, my business was pushed to a point where its viability is feeling threatened.
It feels as if Hospitality and Small Business are being squeezed out by Government actions and/or inactions and our CBD is rapidly descending into business unfriendly zones with continuous disruption, few tourists and a diminishing working population/foot traffic given working from home is the new normal. Too many hospitality venues and small businesses are looking dislocated and marginalised with many closings. We have a shrinking customer base, labour shortage crisis where we are pursuing the same pool of staff, many struggle to provide an infrastructure to “break even” let alone drive profit. Our very business independence or DNA is threatened. We, the owners, and operators, are exhausted and stretched beyond reason with no obvious end in sight.
Our traditional industry representatives are getting no traction with lobbying government or effectively communicating our narrative and we do not speak with a strong voice. Current approach appears to be un-coordinated and at best piecemeal and in any event are ignored.
To discuss a plan for change Alistair Boyce (Backbencher/The Immigrant’s Son Espresso) and Alastair Lang from Capital Produce are interested in inviting you to a get together with likeminded small business owners to have a social wine and cheese gathering but more importantly share thoughts on the positive changes needed for small business and hospitality in particular.
If this interests you then please email [email protected] to join with us on Monday 3 October from 4.30pm at The Immigrants Son Espresso, 22 Kaiwharawhara Road, Ngaio Gorge to meet, mingle and share your ideas on this emerging crisis.
