New Ice Plant in Labu Tale Village: A Game-Changer for Local Fishermen 🐟🙍

Louise Lahoc (Apunga Media Freelancers) ... ✍️

The newly constructed ice plant in Labu Tale Village, located in the Huon Gulf District of Morobe Province, marks a significant development for the local fishing community. Initiated by Mr. John Kasu, the former Managing Director of the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) in Papua New Guinea, this project aims to transform the fishing landscape in the region.

Background and Funding

The ice plant is funded by the National Fisheries Authority, reflecting its commitment to supporting local fisheries and improving livelihoods in coastal communities. Under Mr. Kasu’s vision, the facility is designed not only to preserve fish but also to stimulate economic activity within Labu and neighboring coastal areas.

Benefits for Local Fishermen

Traditionally, fishermen in Labu and surrounding communities faced challenges in selling their catches. Many were forced to travel long distances to Lae, the capital of Morobe Province, to find buyers. This not only incurred significant travel costs but also reduced the freshness and quality of their fish by the time it reached the market.

The new ice plant offers a convenient solution. Local fishermen can now collect ice free of charge before heading out to sea. Upon their return, they can sell their catch directly to the ice plant, ensuring that their fish remains fresh and fetches a better price.

Economic Opportunities

This initiative is poised to create multiple economic opportunities. By providing a reliable market for fish, the ice plant encourages local fishermen to increase their catches and optimize their sales processes. It fosters a sustainable model that not only benefits individual fishermen but also enhances the overall economy of the village.

Community Impact

Beyond economic benefits, the ice plant serves as a vital community resource. It strengthens local ties by encouraging fishermen to work together, share knowledge, and support one another in their fishing endeavors. The initiative is also expected to promote better fishing practices and sustainability as fishermen become more invested in the local market.

Conclusion

The establishment of the ice plant in Labu Tale Village represents a promising shift for local fisheries. Thanks to the vision and leadership of Mr. John Kasu and the support of the National Fisheries Authority, fishermen in this region are set to experience enhanced economic stability, improved livelihoods, and a stronger community bond. This project stands as a testament to the potential of targeted initiatives in transforming the livelihoods of coastal communities in Papua New Guinea.

Heavy Rain Causes Severe Flooding in Lae: Urgent Call for Improved Drainage Systems

Lae, the vibrant city of Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea, is grappling with unprecedented flooding due to ongoing heavy rainfall. The relentless downpours have wreaked havoc across the city, underscoring the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of the city's drainage infrastructure.

Over the past month, Lae has experienced a series of intense rainstorms, culminating in severe flooding that has overwhelmed the city's drainage capabilities. The situation has been exacerbated by the recent loss of the Yalu Bridge, which was destroyed by floodwaters last August. The bridge, a critical link for local transportation and commerce, was temporarily replaced with a makeshift structure. Unfortunately, this temporary bridge has proven inadequate against the current flood conditions in the Yalu River.

The inadequacy of the temporary bridge highlights a pressing issue: the urgent need for a permanent solution to the city’s drainage and flood management problems. The ongoing rains have not only disrupted daily life but have also caused significant damage to infrastructure, property, and local businesses. The situation is exacerbated by the city's limited capacity to manage such extreme weather events, pointing to a larger issue of inadequate urban planning and flood prevention measures.

In light of these challenges, there is a critical need for the Lae City Authority and the national government to address the city's drainage system comprehensively. Effective drainage systems are crucial for mitigating the impact of heavy rainfall and preventing future flooding. Investments in robust infrastructure, including improved drainage channels, flood defenses, and resilient bridges, are essential to safeguarding the city against future weather events.

Local residents and business owners are calling for immediate action to upgrade and maintain drainage systems, repair or replace the damaged Yalu Bridge with a more durable structure, and implement long-term flood management strategies. The heavy rains have demonstrated the vulnerability of the city's infrastructure, and without significant improvements, the risk of future floods remains high.

The Lae City Authority and government officials are urged to prioritize these infrastructure challenges, drawing on lessons learned from the recent flooding to develop and implement solutions that will protect Lae from future disasters. The well-being of the city's residents and the stability of its economic and social fabric depend on effective and timely responses to these pressing issues.

It is with mere pride that I see the Morobe Provincial Flag flying high everyday as a design of one of my own elder tribesmen.

The Morobe flag was designed by Guy Kiliki and approved by Tutumang (Morobe Provincial Government) in 1982. Mr Kiliki decided the colors green for Morobe highlands, yellow for valley/coast and blue for the islands. He choose to have the picture of a kundu representing the vast cultures we have and is used by all people during cultural dances, pig tusk as wealth because men used it as traditional money to pay for bride price, spear represents tribal warfare as in the past, ethnic clashes was part of our lives but due to early missionaries influence, we have changed. And since Morobe is the biggest province in PNG, Guy decided that the bird of paradise should be on our flag also.

Guy Kiliki was a research officer for Morobe Provincial Constitutional Review Commission and a prominent elder of Labu Butu village in Labu, Huon Gulf District.
Mr Kiliki was heavily involved in the political development of Morobe Province in the early 1980's under the leadership of former premier of Morobe late Utula Samana.
Guy Kiliki traveled the length and breadth of Morobe conducting interviews, discussions and consultative meetings with the villages, communities and organizations of the society.
They interpreted the sections and subsections of the constitution and got the village people's views and opinions of what changes they wanted to make in the Morobe Constitution. They had the review to the constitution ready and tabled their interim report in April and submitted their final report in June 1983. The report was tabled before the Tutumang and was approved and adopted the provincial constitution.

Apart from the provincial constitution review work, Guy Kiliki was asked by late Samana to design a flag for the province, in which he did. The national government recognized Guy Kiliki's service to the community and gave him a meritorious community service medal in 2008 new year award.
