Scientists agree that sleep is essential to health, and while stages 1 to 4 and REM sleep are all important, deep sleep is the most essential of all for feeling rested and staying healthy.
Most people are aware of the two different types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM. However, what many donโt know is that non-REM sleep actually has four different stages that you pass in and out of through the night.
How much time you spend on each of these stages and the stage you wake from can have a big impact on how rested you feel and how much energy you have throughout the day.
Here are the five stages of sleep and why they matter.
Stage 1 of non-REM sleep
When you first fall asleep, you enter stage 1 of non-REM sleep.
This is characterized by the cessation of muscle movement and the slow movement of the eyes behind the eyelid. This is the โtwilightโ stage of sleep where you are probably still aware of some of the things going on around you. This is a light stage of sleep and you can usually be woken by noises or other disturbances.
Stage 2 of non-REM sleep
This is the stage where you are actually fully asleep and not aware of your surroundings. During stage 2, the heart rate and breathing regulate, the body temperature goes down, the eye movements either slow or stop completely.
Stage 3 of non-REM sleep
Brain waves slow down in stage 3 with only a few bursts of activity. This is a deep sleep where muscles relax and breathing slows even more. This stage of sleep is difficult to awaken from and you may feel disoriented if an alarm or disturbance pulls you out of it.
Stage 4 of non-REM sleep
Stage 4 is an even deeper sleep where the brain waves further slow and sleepers are very difficult to wake. Itโs believed that tissue repair occurs during the stage of sleep and that hormones are also released to help with growth.
Stage 5: REM sleep
The final stage of sleep is REM and this is the cycle where we dream. The eyes move rapidly behind the lids and breathing becomes shallow and rapid. Blood pressure and heart rate also increase during REM sleep and the arms and legs are paralyzed so that sleepers canโt act out their dreams. The purpose of this stage (and of dreams) is thought to stimulate the sections of the brain that are needed for memory and learning and a way for the brain to store and sort information.
REM sleep occurs approximately 90 minutes into the sleep cycle.The length of each cycle changes throughout the night, but the typical sleeper will cycle through the stages several times before waking. For those with sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, the deeper levels of sleep may not be reached as frequently as is normal because they are constantly being woken.This can lead to the bodyโs inability to repair damage, few dreams, and increased fatigue upon waking and throughout the day.If you have symptoms such as brain fog, inability to concentrate, the need for naps, irritability, or lack of focus, it could be due to lack of deep sleep
The average healthy adult gets roughly 1 to 2 hours of deep sleep per 8 hours of nightly sleep
The average person sleeps about seven hours a night around the age of 40, and about six and a half hours a night between the ages of 55 and 60.
A healthy 80-year-old will usually sleep about six hours a night. But these are all only averages: everyone needs a different amount of sleep.
Everyone dreams anywhere from 3 to 6 times each night.
Dreaming is normal and a healthy part of sleeping.
Dreams are a series of images, stories, emotions and feelings that occur throughout the stages of sleep.
The dreams that you remember happen during the REM cycle of sleep.

We all need on average 6 to 8 hours of sleep!
Create a Bedtime Routine
Having a bedtime routine means that you consistently perform activities that wind you down for sleep. Repeating your routine each night will help signal to your body that it's almost time to rest.
Some examples of activities in bedtime routines include:
Sipping some peppermint tea (which promotes relaxation)
Taking a warm shower
Changing into comfy pajamas
Flossing and brushing your teeth
Doing some light stretching
Reading a few pages of a book
Listening to a sleep meditation
Make Sure Your Bedroom Is Comfortable
Ideally, your bedroom is a cool, dark place where there are no loud noises that keep you from falling asleep. If there is any light coming into your room, try blocking it out with blackout curtains or a sleep mask. You can also try a white noise machine or earplugs to drown out any sound.
Diffusing essential oils in your room may help bring on sleep as well. For instance, inhaling lavender has been shown to improve sleep quality in people with self-reported sleep issues.
Try to avoid using your bed as a place to eat meals, watch TV, or work on your laptop during the day. This is so that you don't associate your bed with activity, but rather, with rest.
Invest in Your Bedding
An old or uncomfortable mattress or pillow can result in interrupted sleep, back pain, and neck pain. To avoid this:
Select a supportive bed and pillows: Sleep on a bed and pillow that have enough support and comfort for your body.
Look for quality bedding: Some people like linen or cotton sheets and comforters because they're breathable materials.
