SDS Pagatpatan caps ACNHS Araw ng Pagbasa
✒️ Vincent John Garcia
SDO Alaminos City Chief Executive, Dr. Vivian Luz S. Pagatpatan graced the month-long school-based celebration of the Pambansang Buwan at Araw ng Pagbasa (PBAP) 2023 Kick-off Ceremony of Alaminos City National High School as Mystery Reading Ambassador to foster and develop the love for reading among students.
Pagatpatan said before reading the parable, Ang Alibughang Anak, that she loved and enjoyed reading books when she was young.
She began the story reading by introducing the text and unlocking the meaning of alibugha.
As she read the story, Pagatpatan used an effective questioning strategy to keep the students engaged and to check their understanding by asking comprehension questions.
The post-reading made the students even more excited as Pagatpatan gave away prizes to students who were able to answer her questions.
“I enjoyed listening to Ma’am Vivian because she is very engaging. She motivated us to listen and look forward to the development of the story she read. Winning prizes is just a bonus,” Tristan Duke Mendoza, Grade 10 student said in an interview.
Some students also showcased their talents in poetry recital that impressed Pagatpatan.
The ceremony was concluded by Assistant Schools Division Superintendent and Officer in Charge of the Office of the School Principal IV Marilu N. Cardenas by discussing the importance of reading and how could it be life-changing.
“May pag-asa sa pagbasa,” Cardenas ended.
This year’s theme for the PBAP 2023 is “PAGBASA: Para sa MATATAG na kinabukasan”.

ACNHS LAUNCHES ‘SHOP AND READ’
Learning is Priceless
Today marks the highlight of the National Reading Month celebration for the Alaminos City National High School (ACNHS) because it formally opened to the public its Reading Center, featuring one of the school’s reading innovations dubbed as Shop and Read (S and R) with the tagline, Learning is Priceless!
Internal and external stakeholders attended the program and strengthened their partnership and commitment in providing the needs of the struggling readers.
Board Member of the First District of Pangasinan Apolonia G. Bacay in her inspirational message said she would continue to support the literacy programs of the school.
“Asahan ninyo po ang aking suporta para matulungan po natin ang mga mag-aaral na hirap sa pagbasa. Nakita ko na may mga kailangan pa rito sa reading center kaya i-poprovide po natin yan, lalo na at nalaman ko na marami sa mga estudyante na kailangan ang programang ito ay taga sa aming barangay,” she added.
Meanwhile, Curriculum Implementation Division (CID) Chief Orlando I, Guerrero congratulated the school for coming up with a reading center that would be a hub for all the students and teachers.
One of the highlights of the program was the simulation on Shop and Read procedure by the selected Grade 7 students. They read the words they shopped to the teachers, guests, and stakeholders. Some of them who read all the words correctly were given simple tokens as rewards.
“I enjoyed and had so much fun! Shopping words and reading them to the guests made me so nervous and excited. Nervous because I thought I might not read all the words, and excited because if I’ll read them all correctly, I’ll get a reward,” Jan Dayle D. Donato, a Grade 7 student, said.
The conceptualization of Shop and Read was based on the data report of the school Reading Coordinator Vincent John C. Garcia.
Out of approximately 7,000 students both in the JHS and SHS levels who were assessed using the Functional Literacy Assessment Tool (FLAT) last September-October, 46 students were at the Nothing Level, and 490 were in the Word level in the JHS; whereas, in the SHS, 15 students were in the Nothing level and 81 were in the Word level.
“Something must be done because it’s a big number and we must address the reading problems. We, in the English Department are still learning the science of teaching beginning reading,” Dr. Eliza G. Abelon, Master Teacher II and proponent of Shop and Read remarked.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jose M. Radoc Jr., Head Teacher III of the English Department thanked the stakeholders for their invaluable support.
He said, “with your guidance and support and for sharing your wisdom for making S&R a reality, we convey our deep appreciation.
Part of the program was the reading of a local story by a reading ambassador. Dr. Vivian Luz S. Pagatpatan, OIC Schools Division Superintendent of SDO Alaminos City read to the Grade 7 students of Dr. Juvilou A. Boling, Master Teacher I. She also asked few questions to check the comprehension skills of students.
In her message, Dr. Pagatpatan said that reading is fundamental to learning. She also said that the passion and love for reading must be instilled in students.
One of the stakeholders, Mr. Rudell A. Ramirez, Assistant Professor of UP Los Baños, also gave his short message. According to him, when a student learns to read and comprehend, he/she becomes a critical thinker and starts to be involved in what is happening in his/her environment and country.
In his closing remarks, School Principal IV Aladin M. Mayo thanked all the stakeholders and commended the English Department led by Radoc for initiating reading initiatives and innovations.
Also present during the program were City Librarian Virgie E. Aquino, Miss Richelle Ann Majin from the City Information Office, Retired Master Teacher II Cora A. Fangon, Press Official Josephine A. Satuito, EPS in ESP Ronald B. Radoc, OIC Assistant School Principals, Dr. Sherlyn V. Romasoc and Mr. Jose Ramil A. Sibun, Head Teachers Emily V. Untalasco, Dr. Anegla C. Amil, Florencio C. Valdez, Arnold P. Imbisan, Gina O. Liwanag, Dr. Cristy Grace W. Bautista, Dr. Michelle L. Navarro, Mrs. Marinel N. Sison, SPTA Chairman and Vice Chairman Pastor Romenito A. Pader and Mrs. Thelema S. Apaya, English teachers, and key officials of the Supreme Student Government led by Miss Danielle Gulen.

ACNHS robotics bets bag awards in 2022 National Robotics Tilt
Alaminos City National High School (ACNHS) robotics champs won several awards in the 2022 National Robotics Championship sponsored by Pinoy Robot Games on October 5.
Despite the three years of distance learning, ACNHS still soars high in national competitions--proof that even a health crisis cannot stop students from realizing their full potential.
In the competition, Conrad Kenneth A. Rapatalo landed in the third spot, in the Creative Category for his Science Investigatory Project Proposal, BaBaBot: Bamboo-based Smart Hydroponics with the Internet of Things Connection Robot.
Also, Gabriella Allyson L. Esguerra won second place in the Line Tracing Category of the same competition.
This would not be possible without the robotics expertise of their coach, Mr. Kris Cristhopher C. Dela Cruz, who at the same time was recognized as the Most Outstanding Robotics Coach by the Pinoy Robot Games.
"Waiting for the day the competition to come felt nerve-wracking since there wasn't much to prepare. Waiting for my turn to use that robot made me extremely anxious and light-headed. When it was my turn, I felt excited since I was finally going to stand there and control the robot. I felt ecstatic when I won second place in a national competition and [I] will always be grateful for being a part of it," said Esguerra in an interview.
According to the Science teachers, Robotics is gaining more popularity among high schoolers nowadays. However, because of it being expensive, a lot of students are disheartened to try even if they have the skill.
Doctor Michelle L. Navarro, master teacher and OIC head teacher said that allocating more funds for such an amazing activity in the years to come would surely entice more students.

ACNHS STUDES VOW TO BE READING TUTORS
I am. I can. So, I will.
This became the mantra of the student leaders of the Alaminos City National High School (ACNHS) after they pledged to serve as reading tutors or volunteers to their schoolmates who are struggling.
This afternoon, the Senior High School (SHS) Dept., led by OIC asst. school principals, Dr. Sherlyn V. Romasoc and Mr. Jose Ramil A. Sibun, spearheaded the orientation program and MOA signing for the student-reading volunteers at the Alumni Home.
In his message, Mr. Aladin M. Mayo, the school principal, challenged the students to be of service to their fellow in helping them to read.
Mrs. Analiza C. Racraquin and Mrs. Sitti Fatima A. Estabillo, SHS teachers and reading coordinators explained the reading assessment tools, as well as the reading levels.
Moreover, Mr. Leovanny A. Aglibot, a SHS teacher and former elementary teacher discussed some strategies and approaches in teaching beginning reading.
With Aglibot's expertise in teaching reading, he also shared some tips on how a student could be an effective reading 'buddy' to his/her fellow.
Meanwhile, while the opening program for the orientation has commenced at the Alumni Home, the Junior High School (JHS) reading coordinators, along with the Pangasinan State University (PSU) Alaminos City Campus reading volunteers and the non-teaching personnel, were preparing the reading center.
"We're almost done with the reading assessment both in English and in Filipino, so right after that, we will now use our reading center as the venue for all our reading undertakings, especially our reading innovation, Shop and Read, which will soon be launched," said Dr. Eliza G. Abelon, master teacher and proponent of the said program.
With approximately 6,000 students being diagnosed in reading, the ACNHS reading committee and the teachers are positive that the right prescriptions be given according to the different reading problems.

Pinangunahan nina Pastor Romenito A. Pader at Gng.
