Language

Angeles city council strengthened the use of the Kapampangan language as it passed four resolutions this month written in the mother tongue. The initiative is in support of the enforcement of Ordinance No. 424 series of 2017, establishing Kapampangan as the official language of Angeles City and institutionalizing its use in all sectors, alongside existing national and official languages. Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. said this ordinance not only serves to promote the Kapampangan language but also to preserve and nurture Angeles City’s culture and heritage. Lazatin also asked the help of media outlets to raise awareness about the Amanung Sisuan or mother tongue, to make sure that the next generation of Kapampangans can carry the city’s culture and language.

History of Angles City

Before it was known as Angeles City, it was just a little community headed by Don Angel Pantalion de Miranda, Captain Mayor of San Fernando. It was given the name "Culiat" after a woody vine that grew abundantly in the area at the time. The Negrito Tribesman were the people known who lived there.

Barrio Culiat remained a part of San Fernando for 33 years, during which time a church, primary school, and certain industries, such as a sugar mill and wine distillery, were established, allowing the barrio's economy to grow. The barrio became a separate town from San Fernando on December 8, 1829, after Don Angel paid the required amount under the legislation at the time for the separation of Culiat. Following that, the town's name was changed to "El Pueblos de Los Angeles" in honor of its patron saint, the Holy Guardian Angels, as well as Don Angel, the town's founder.

General Frederick D. Grant founded the first American administration of Angles on January 1, 1900, and Angeles City became a city 64 years later.
