The immune system is made up of many biological structures and processes that detect a wide variety of foreign agents and pathogens and distinguish them from the body's own healthy tissue. Different types of nutrients work in various ways to support the immune system.
HEALTHY IMMUNE SUPPORT REQUIRES A TEAM OF NUTRIENTS
There are three types of immunity: surface immunity, innate immunity, and adaptive immunity.
Micronutrients contribute to the body's natural defenses on three levels by supporting physical barriers (skin/mucosa), cellular immunity, and antibody production. Vitamins A, C, E, and the mineral zinc assist in enhancing the skin barrier function. Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, and folic acid, and the minerals iron, zinc, copper and selenium work synergistically to support the protective activities of the immune cells. Finally, all these micronutrients, with the exception of vitamin C and iron, are essential for the production of antibodies.
Overall, inadequate intake and status of these vitamins and minerals may lead to a suppressed immune system, which increases the risk of infections and aggravates malnutrition. Therefore, supplementation with a multivitamin that includes these micronutrients can support the body's natural defense system by enhancing all three levels of immunity.
USANA's Proglucamune contains a natural yeast beta 1,3/1,6 glucan derived from the cell wall of a highly purified, proprietary strain of baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Once swallowed, immune cells in the gastrointestinal tract take up the beta-glucan and transport it to immune organs throughout the body. While in the immune organs, immune cells called macrophages digest beta-glucan into smaller fragments and slowly release them over a number of days. The fragments bind to neutrophils, via complement receptor 3 (CR3), which are the most abundant immune cells in the body. The neutrophils account for 40-60% of all immune cells.

One of the most important benefits of curcumin is its ability to inhibit certain molecules that trigger pro-inflammatory processes.
THE SAFETY AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF CURCUMIN
Turmeric is an orange-yellow spice that can often be found in curry powder. It has been used in traditional Indian medicine many years. More recently, modern medicine has determined that its anti-inflammatory actions are due to a compound within the plant known as curcumin.
A study compiled the data from numerous previous experiments on the toxicity and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin. Among the data included four cases on the anti-inflammatory ability of curcumin in humans. The studies ranged from as few as five participants to as many as 45 and the subjects were each given curcumin for a length of time ranging between two weeks to 22 months. In all four cases there was statistically significant evidence that curcumin was effective in reducing inflammation.
Laboratory studies have concluded that there are a number of different molecules involved in triggering the inflammation process. Curcumin reduces inflammation by inhibiting many of these trigger molecules. Some of these trigger molecules inhibited by curcumin include: phospholipase, lipooxygenase, COX-2, leukotrienes, thromboxane, prostaglandins, nitric oxide, collagenase, elastase, hyaluronidase, MCP-1, interferon-inducible protein, tumor necrosis factor, and interleukin-12.

In a large study of postmenopausal women, those with the highest serum beta-carotene levels had a significantly lower risk of both colorectal and colon cancer. A major take away from this study is that the benefit was seen most significantly in repeated measurements over time. In other words, with consistent intake.
HIGH BETA-CAROTENE LEVELS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH A REDUCED RISK OF COLORECTAL AND COLON CANCER IN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN
Until recently, large population studies analyzing the connection between serum antioxidant levels and cancer risk have used only a single measurement at baseline. In a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers used repeated measurements to assess the relationship between serum levels of eight antioxidants and the risk of colorectal cancer.
Participants included 5,477 adult women enlisted in the Women’s Health Initiative study. Over a follow-up period of 12 years, repeated measurements of serum retinol, alpha-carotene,
beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein+zeaxanthin, lycopene, alpha-tocopherol, and gamma-tocopherol were taken.
Baseline measurements showed no significant association with risk of colorectal cancer, although higher baseline levels of beta-carotene were related (not statistically significant) to reduced risk of colon cancer. However, using repeated measurements of beta-carotene, the average of all measurements was significantly associated with a reduced risk of both colorectal and colon cancer of 46% and 53% respectively. The repeated measurements of other antioxidants did not reveal any significant relation to cancer risk.
The results of this study showed that baseline levels of antioxidant nutrients were not associated with risk of colorectal or colon cancer. However, using repeated measures, a relatively high serum level of β-carotene was inversely associated with risk of colon and colorectal cancer in postmenopausal women.
