Being a student leader is all about standing up and taking responsibility, carrying it on your back, having the drive to take action, and being committed to a cause. Student leadership is about showing up. As the university election nears, it is perhaps time to reevaluate whether you have what it takes to be a leader or if you are just running to chase clout.
Being a student leader demands more than just a titleโit is a commitment to a cause, the school community, and a vision. Of course, there will be times when you do not feel your best, but you need to be there, because your presence matters, and your peers trust you to lead them. You will give your time, effort, and energy to deliver. The beauty of student volunteerism besides the service you voluntarily provide to your school community is that it creates a ripple effect to others, you inspire, and you light the spark that is within them, so they can follow and get involved. Being a true leader means that you prioritize the collective welfare of the student body over your personal gain and make sure everyone is heard and valued.
Is compromising your values and authenticity in pursuit of fast and fleeting fame, which thrives in shallow popularityโthe superficial fame, the likes, and the followersโworth it? And after the campaign period, after the adrenaline-induced happiness wears off, will you be ready to take on the responsibility? Are you prepared? Are you qualified? Because student volunteerism is so much more than that. If it is all about online bragging rights rather than genuine commitment, I insist you think twice about running for that position.
If you win and suddenly realize you cannot fulfill your commitment, who suffers? Your co-leaders, who will shoulder the burden of your inability to show up when it matters, and the school body, who trusted you and expected you to deliver on the promises you made during your campaign.
The university deserves student leaders with the drive, heart, and mind to lead. As the election period nears may we all think and reflect on what it really means to be called a โstudent leaderโ.
