A ₱299 ENGAGEMENT RING—VALUED or DEVALUED?

Recently, a post went viral—a ₱299 engagement ring. That's roughly about $5 USD. To some of you here who have no idea, the viral post is about a woman asking for an opinion if what she felt was valid or just an overreaction. Her boyfriend of 8 years proposed to her and found out that he gave her an engagement ring worth ₱299. This didn't sit well on her, prompting her to ask: Is this just my worth?

First, a woman's or anyone's worth can't be and shouldn't be measured by any monetary value or things that glitter.

Second, this is why communication is key. Things like this must be discussed when you are in a relationship, especially that long. What the woman felt was valid, but the fact that she was questioning her worth for a piece of metal—means her expectations and standards weren't met.

When you build deeper connections with your person, you should know them already, things like what makes them happy, what they like, and what they love. A healthy and mature relationship doesn't thrive with just small talk—it thrives more in the ability to go through tough conversations, including money.

Third, know how to manage expectations. Ask tough questions not just to your partner but to yourself. What is more important to you? What do you and your partner value the most? What are your relationship's core values? These things must be clear to avoid future disappointments and dissatisfactions within the relationship.

Fourth, every relationship is unique; what works for other couples may not work for you. What social media and society tell you as the "standard" is not a make-or-break thing. Always make sure that you do YOU.

Fifth, your intention must be clear. If you want to marry someone one day, then, make a plan, set a goal, and save up—so you can give your person what they truly deserve.

Lastly, you can have the most expensive ring or the cheapest one—at the end of the day, it won't matter, because to be brutally honest? A ring’s value doesn’t equate to the success and the quality of your marriage life.
