SOUND HEALING in the rainy season....
Everyone is familiar with the way the weather can influence wellbeing. This can vary from person to person depending on preference and associations. For example, one person might feel happier on sunny days because they love to go the beach, while another may enjoy the nostalgia of snow during Christmas time. Aside from personal taste, however, there is scientific evidence backing the various ways weather influences mood and mental wellbeing. Understanding the science behind the relationship between weather and mood can help us to better prepare for environmental changes that may influence the way we feel. For those struggling with depression or addiction, paying attention to weather changes and sunlight exposure can go a long way in maintaining motivations and working towards recovery.
DARKNESS AND DEPRESSION
A lack of sunlight has always been associated with sad emotions, but only over the last few decades has research been able to better explain why this is. Our bodies are built with an internal clock that has been conditioned through evolution to coincide with the rotation of night and day. In other words, we are programmed to feel alert when the sun is up, and drowsy after it goes down. During the winter months, when days become shorter and it may become dark before you even leave work, this internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, causes some inconvenient effects. A lack of sunlight prompts the body to produce melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep. Feeling drowsy at work or when you still have tasks to complete in your day can be frustrating and lead to irritability. At the same time, your brain begins to produce less serotonin. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood, appetite, and sleep. Without adequate amounts of serotonin while awake, it can be difficult to experience a sense of wellbeing.
Now that a wealth of data has been collected on the effects of sunlight, or lack thereof, experts have classified the associated negative symptoms as a mood disorder. This condition, known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, especially affects people living in areas of the world with long winters and entire months without sun. It can, however, occur in any climate. SAD is characterized by symptoms of depression that return around the same time every year. A rare form of SAD is found in people who experience chronic depression during the summer months, but most people with this condition experience symptoms during short days and cold weather.
RAIN, APPETITE, AND PAIN
Rainy days are known for contributing to the blues, but science confirms rain may be responsible for several unpleasant bodily changes. The dip in serotonin levels caused by the lack of sun on rainy days can create food cravings, especially for comforting carbohydrates such as bread and pasta. This may in part be a response to symptoms of depression associated with gloomy weather, as carbohydrates temporarily boost serotonin levels and improve mood. This effect, however, is short-lived, and not an advisable way to regularly combat symptoms of depression.
In addition to the changes in appetite associated with dark, rainy days, rain comes with a change in atmospheric pressure that can have painful affects in the body. Pressure in the nerves and joints caused by a shift in bodily fluid in response to the environmental pressure can cause aches and a lack of mobility. This can contribute to a lack of motivation to exercise, which only exacerbates depressive symptoms.
SUN, COGNITIVE FUNCTION, AND CREATIVITY
As you may have guessed based on the many negative effects of a lack of sunlight, healthy amounts of sunlight can have various positive effects on mood and brain function. Despite the temperature, spending time outdoors when the sun is shining can increase serotonin production, improve memory, and even spark the creative process. A recent study took a closer look at the exact chemical process in the brain in response to UV exposure from the sun and found that, while there is still much to learn, there is a definite connection between the production of critical neurotransmitters and exposure to sunlight. With more research we may be able to better understand how people who spend a great deal of time indoors or live in low-sun areas are more vulnerable to mental illness, problems with memory and cognition, and addiction. While we may not be able to control the weather, we can walk fully informed into rainy days and winter months, and take steps to better preserve our mental health and improve mood.
What Are Sound Baths? Everything You Need to Know
The phrase "sound bath" has a certain ring to it that makes it sound relaxing. Maybe you have heard of this term recently since they are starting to gain more popularity.
Did you know that the practice of using sounds waves may date back thousands of years? The acoustic properties of architectural structures were very important to ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.
Sound baths are commonly used today to enhance a meditative session, but there is much more to them than that. Keep reading on to learn more about sound baths and their benefits.
Purpose of Sound Baths
A sound bath is a form of vibrational healing to help overcome energy blockages that may be preventing you from achieving physical and mental health.
Traditionally sound baths are used for relaxation and meditation purposes. However, today sound baths are popping up in addiction rehabilitation centers and other treatment centers due to their wide range of health benefits.
Sound baths use the same idea as white noise machines to help someone fall asleep, or a high-energy playlist enables you to get the best workout in. However, sound baths take these ideas one step further.
Sound baths encourage mind and body connection and using the breath to bring awareness to the participant’s present moment.
Where to Find Sound Therapy?
A variety of meditation practices use sound baths, and sessions can range from 15 minutes to an hour or more. Typically, a person trained in sound healing leads these sessions.
Sound bath sessions can be facilitated in a group setting, for example, at the end of a yoga class. Sound baths can also be personalized and provided individually as a meditative session or in spa services.
There are a variety of ways instructors like to lead sonic treatment sessions. For example, some prefer doing it for groups, whereas others prefer a more individualized setting.
How long a sound bath session is performed may vary based on the wellness center or fitness studio. Likewise, every sound bath instructor and location is not the same.
Incorporated in Yoga Practice
Some yoga instructors continue their education and take a sound healing course. This allows them to integrate yoga and sound healing to enhance their practice.
Many times in yoga classes, sound baths will be used during the savasana, which typically occurs at the end of a yoga sequence flow.
At this time, one or more instruments will be played, and the vibrations will wash over the body. The sound waves help bring the emotional, mental, and physical energies in alignment. This allows for relaxation and calmness to take place.
Incorporated during Spa Treatment
Some spa services use sound wave therapy as a part of their massage services. Many have found that this deepens relaxation and adds health benefits to their spa treatment.
Sound baths are most effective when your mind and body are both relaxed. This is why sound baths are commonly seen during spa services and yoga practices.
Quieting the Daily Noise
With our daily lives becoming busier and more stressful, many people are trying to find ways to relax and relieve tension. Thus, the reason that sound baths are gaining more popularity.
As much as we try to prevent it or may not realize it, our lives are full of "negative sounds." Wheater from the news, media, traffic, or workplace gossip, these destructive sounds can lead to health problems.
Sound baths help nourish the body and can actually change the brain's wiring. This rewiring takes time and practice, but it can help boost both your physical and emotional health.
More Than Just Sounds
Sound baths combine science, metaphysics, and music therapy to create powerful sound healing.
Experienced sound healing practitioners are trained to utilize specific vibrational frequencies, musical intervals, rhythms, isochronic tones, binaural beats, and overtone emitting instruments to promote deep healing.
How Is a Sound Bath Performed?
There is a variety of specific instruments that are commonly used for sound baths. Most of them are known as sound healing instruments. Depending on the person leading the sound bath, some may prefer to use one instrument; others may choose a combination of sound healing tools.
Instruments used for sound bath sessions include:
Himalayan Singing bowls
Crystal singing bowls
Gongs
Tuning forks
Chimes (quartz or metal)
Koshi
Harmonium or shruti box
Native American and Pan flutes
Didgeridoo
Handpans or steel tongue drums
Kalimbas
Hammered dulcimers or Santoors
Harps
Cymbals
Rainmakers
Shakers
Drums
Some of these require a lot of skill and training in order to incorporate into a sound bath session, whereas others are much easier to learn.
Singing bowls are the most popular instruments used in sound baths and other sound healing practices. There are two kinds of singing bowls implemented in vibrational healing: Metal Himalayan singing bowls (also known as Tibetan singing bowls) and Crystal singing bowls (also known as Quartz singing bowls) that are made of silica sand.
Deep Meditation
These instruments help to guide you through a meditative state. Many times, during meditation, your mind may wander off, which hinders you from a deep meditation state.
Many people find that sound baths can help them focus during meditation and prevent their minds from wandering to their to-do list or other worries. Some people have also found that sound baths help them to have a deeper meditative state and deeper relaxation.
It is recommended to identify a goal or intention before starting a sound bath session. The intention can be a word or phrase to bring your focus back to the sound bath session.
Setting an intention brings your mind back to focus if your mind starts to wander off during the sound bath session.
Sound baths can have a different impact on each individual. Even each sound bath session may have a different impact on you as well.
Benefits to Sound Baths
Sound bath work similarly to the body as music therapy does - music therapy and sound wave therapy work by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for relaxation and rest. It helps regulate the body's normal digestion, heart rate, and respiration.
Sound therapy has been proven to have several physical health benefits, including:
Boosting immune function
Reducing anxiety and depression
Lowering blood pressure
Lowering heart rate
Decreasing physical pain
Help in sleep disorders such as sleep deprivation
Not only can sound baths help boost your physical health, but they can also help to enhance your emotional wellbeing. Studies show that sound baths and music therapy can boost your attention, improve empathy, reduce tension, raise emotional resilience, and lower stress levels
Sound Baths incorporated during Spa Treatment
Some spa services use sound wave therapy as a part of their massage services. Many have found that this deepens relaxation and adds health benefits to their spa treatment.
Sound baths are most effective when your mind and body are both relaxed. This is why sound baths are commonly seen during spa services and yoga practices.

Tips for discovering the healing power of singing bowls:
1. Find a quiet place
The bowls are best experienced in a soothing quiet setting. This allows you to focus and for the tones of each bowl to be heard and felt fully. Once you tap into the vibration, it can help to clear the body of illness or negativity.
2. Be mindful
A singing bowl is not an inanimate object; they have their own thoughts as well. When we play it can seem like we are talking with them; in the moment you are working together with the bowl to create the best sound for the receiver. It is important to pour in your positive thoughts when you play – whatever you are focusing on is magnified by sound and vibration.
3. Connect with the bowls
All the crystal singing bowls at Heart of the Earth Spa are my friends. Before I start to play, I take a moment to connect with them, to talk to them. I recommend everyone takes a moment to tune in with the bowl they’re about to play.
4. Learn how to play
There are several ways of playing a singing bowl:
You can tap the wand on the side of the bowl to create a bell like sound. This is an effective way of creating a sound change when playing a concert or sound session and a beautiful way of opening and closing.
Another way is to slowly circle the outside circumference of the bowl until it sings at the level of intensity you desire. To achieve this sound, hold the striker or wand like a pencil by the wooden end. Lightly tap the outside rim of the bowl before running it, at about a 30-degree angle, around the outside edge of the rim. Maintain a firm and constant pressure. If you hear a grating or chattering sound, you are not applying enough pressure – but don’t play the bowls too loudly or forcefully, or too close together as they can shatter.
Don’t forget, practice makes perfect. If you have trouble producing a solid sound, take a deep breath and try again.
Finally, only ever use the correct striker and rubber ring (to rest the bowl on) when playing and always treat your bowl with the greatest respect: if you do, it can continue producing healing vibrations for a lifetime.
5. Clean singing bowls at full moon
Our belief is that cleansing a singing bowl under a full moon enhances its vibrations and charges it with powerful positive energy. Using pure water and sea salt, carefully clean away any dirt and debris while taking time to connect with the energy of each bowl for a minute or two.

...how it started...
It started with an invitation to join a sound therapy lesson in autum 2017. I didn’t know what to expect because I have never heard about it before, even I am living in Asia now for about 14 years. The session was a very special experience for me. Deep inside I felt the different sounds and vibrations of the singing bowls. I felt this unique sounds woke up something deep inside of me. Memories, feelings, a very deep relaxation which made it not easy for me to hold back my tears. Never experienced that feeling before. After about one hour and 15 minutes the session was done. Even I didn’t sleep, it felt like it was just an half hour session. That experience was very special and the following hours I felt very special and relaxed. Back in my “9-5 job” I lost somehow the connection to that experience, the interest and time to learn more about this fascinating singing bowl thing. More than a year after that first session I decided to join my second sound therapy session, a couple session with my girlfriend, in a newly opened sound -healing and -therapy center here on the island. That time I wasn’t too excited because I knew what will happen, so I laid down and relaxed and just enjoyed the session. Again, the hours and even the days after that session I felt so good and relaxed. A few months after that session I joined a singing bowl work shop here in Phuket where I bought my first three original himalayan singing bowls. I was so inspired by the effect of these bowls that I started reading about the history, the positive effects and much more about tibetan singing bowls. I started practicing my own sessions, with my girlfriend, friends and colleagues and of course to myself. Soon the three bowls were not enough anymore so I ordered more.... I play everyday, even I only pass the bowls I have to touch and play them for a few minutes. Since I own and use these bowls everyday I felt that something has changed. I am more calm and relaxed and the feedback of my friends after a singing bowl session is always positive. The bowls suddenly became a part of my daily life.
By the end of 2019 I finally took my chance to fly to Kathmandu/Nepal to join a singing bowl and sound healing course and receive my certification by a master, who is a 3rd generation Tibetan Singing Bowl Teacher and Sound Healer and is well known in Kathmandu because he was the first person in the Kathmandu valley of Nepal to work with Tibetan singing bowls. In the beginning of 2020 private events changed our plans unexpectedly. We decided to leave Thailand and move to the Philippines where we are currently building a Sound Therapy treatment area close to the beach in Antique -where the mountains meet the sea- together with -Beau Visage Wellness Spa- a building with a treatment room for all our equipment we have collected over the years from Nepal, Thailand and Japan. Singing bowls, tingshas, bells and healing stones & crystals from all over the world.
