JV Ejercito: New Negros Island Region to enhance business efficiency*
Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito said that the creation of the Negros Island Region will make it easier to do business, as residents and entrepreneurs will have all services available in one administrative region.
“I think it will ease doing business because people who want to invest in sugar mills or agriculture in Negros Occidental will no longer have to travel to Iloilo by ferry for permits and other requirements,” Ejercito told One News’ The Big Story on Thursday.
“Everything they need will now be available in Negros,” emphasized the lawmaker from San Juan, who is the sponsor and author of Republic Act No. 12000, or the Negros Island Region Act, recently signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“Bad weather will no longer hinder people from Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental from conducting business or seeking services at regional offices,” he added.
For those interested in investing in education, health services, or tourism, Ejercito noted that they will no longer need to take a ferry to Santander and endure a two to three-hour trip to Cebu City to conduct business.
“If it’s easier and more convenient, it will definitely encourage more businesses to grow in both provinces.”
According to Ejercito, the rationale for the creation of the region is to enable unified and coordinated island development planning, which will hopefully accelerate the economic transformation of Negros and Siquijor.
He also pointed out that the intention of the NIR Act is to improve the efficiency of government service delivery.
Moreover, Ejercito said that under the law, there will be a single police regional office and military command, as well as coordinated tourism development.
“Negrenses and Siquijodnons will no longer have to cross the seas to reach their respective regional offices for transactions and services.”
“The creation of the region will make services more accessible and efficient.” #

Statement of Congressman Kiko Benitez on enactment of law establishing Negros Island Region:
Tomorrow is history unfolding for the people of Negros, as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to sign the law establishing the Negros Island Region tomorrow, June 13.
We thank President Marcos Jr. for his support of our dream of a separate administrative region for Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental and Siquijor. We are indebted also to the support of Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and our kasimanwa former Senate President Migz Zubiri, and the dedication of all Negros and Siquijor congressmen, and our champions in the Senate, especially our kasimanwa Senator JV Ejercito, who all worked together to shepherd the NIR bill.
The establishment of NIR will bring government services closer to the people of Negros Island and Siquijor, and facilitate integrated development planning towards inclusive, resilient and sustainable development in the region.
We hope that DILG will immediately convene the Technical Working Group that will iron out the institutional arrangements for the transition.
As we celebrate our 126th Independence Day tomorrow, we also commemorate our Days of Reminiscence or "Mga Adlaw Sang Paghanduraw," from June 12 to June 20 every year. We invite all Bacolodnons to participate in the various activities connected to these days. Join us in honoring our history and celebrating our freedom.
Message of Neg.Occ.Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson on the celebration of the 126th Independence Day:
Today is a fitting moment to remember that our cherished freedom comes at a cost, with many sacrifices made for the democracy we enjoy today. The independence gained in 1898 and the struggle to reclaim it in 1946 show that, of all our blessings, our independence is the most costly for those who sacrificed for it and the most demanding for us -- the inheritors.
To quote the great Martin Luther King Jr., “No one really knows why they are alive until they know what they’d die for.” This sentiment perfectly fits those who sacrificed and paved the way for us.
As for us, we should heed the words of former US Secretary of State George Schultz, who eloquently stated, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance and a willingness to act in its defense.”
Today, more than just remembering, we must once again rededicate ourselves to protect, nurture, and ensure that our democracy will flourish.
Our independence is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a constant reminder of our solemn duty to preserve our liberty, promote inclusive development, and work for the betterment of the lives of all Filipinos. To achieve these objectives, we must remain unified as a nation and transcend our self-interests, political differences, and regional, cultural, and social divisions.
This year, as we celebrate Independence Day with the theme “Kasaysayan, Kalayaan, Kinabukasan,” let us commit to honoring history, safeguarding the principles of democracy, equity, and human rights, and striving for greatness in all areas, including education, science, technology, and the arts. Let us cultivate a culture of invention, creativity, and even entrepreneurship to drive our nation forward to a better future, as our portion to the independence handed down to us by our forefathers.
On this historic day, let us also thank all the men and women who serve our country with dedication and selflessness, particularly in light of the recent eruption of Kanlaon—the troops, healthcare workers, emergency responders, volunteers, public servants, and all those who contribute to the safety and advancement of our society. Their unwavering dedication and sacrifices deserve our highest regard and admiration.
In closing, let us all work together to create a society in which no Filipino is left behind and where every individual has the freedom, through equal opportunities, to achieve personal advancement and contribute to nation building.
GOD bless the Philippines, GOD bless Negros Occidental.
Abanse Negrense!

With Higher Production, Current Sugar Supply Adequate
The Philippines is currently experiencing a surplus in sugar production. “The country has an abundant supply of sugar this year. Our increased production has filled our warehouses, so there is no need to import at this time” said Atty. Jesus L. Barrera, Executive Director of the Philippine Sugar Millers’ Association, Inc. (PSMA).
Records from the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) show that as of May 12, 2024, raw sugar production has reached 1.921 million tons, exceeding last year’s 1.799 million tons, while refined sugar production also went up to 687,823 tons from 624,389 tons last season.
Inventory levels have also risen significantly, with 26% increase in raw sugar and 35% increase in refined sugar compared to previous year’s inventory levels, totaling to 1.150 million tons raw equivalent.
Part of the inventory is the 135,675 tons of imported refined sugar that were brought in last year that are still unwithdrawn and unused.
On the other hand, sugar demand has fallen this season. Withdrawals or demand of domestic raw sugar and local refined sugar have decreased by 4.23% and 7.20%, respectively, while withdrawals of imported refined sugar have risen by 16%.
“Even with sugar milling already closed for the season, we are confident that our current sugar inventories will last beyond the start of the next crop year which is estimated to be on October 1, 2024. However, we will continue monitoring the impact of El Nino on the supply levels in the upcoming 2024-2025 harvest.”

Golez- Gamboa tandem in Silay in 2025
It will be the tandem of former Mayor Mark Golez and Councilor Ryan Gamboa for Mayor and Vice Mayor in Silay City in the 2025 elections.
Both were endorsed by Third District Rep. Jose Francisco Benitez and Abang Lingkod party list Rep. Stephen Joseph Paduano, during a meeting yesterday at the Negros Occidental Metro Third congressional office in Talisay City.
Golez, who was chosen as the Asenso Silay mayoralty candidate during the local party convention recently held in Victorias City, yesterday said that incumbent Councilor Ryan Gamboa accepted the offer to be his vice mayoralty candidate in the next year elections.
The Golez- Gamboa tandem came out in the wake of the admission of Vice Mayor Thomas Maynard Ledesma that he was offered by Silay City Mayor Joedith Gallego to join his group.
Gallego defeated Golez during the 2022 elections. But Ledesma, who is the running mate of Golez, won in the vice mayoralty race.
Golez vowed to bring back the glory of Silay, including good governance, and a government, who is against corruption, to ensure the delivery of basic services to the Silaynons, among others.
His mantra remains “ Asenso sang Silay, Asenso sang Panimalay”.*
