PREDICT, PLAN, PREPARE, PRACTICE 🌋
-Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon
Due to the recent volcanic activity and the increase in elevated volcanic SO2 gas flux at Mt. Kanlaon, the Philippine Red Cross Negros Occidental-Bacolod City Chapter would like to remind everyone to stay prepared and vigilant in case of a volcanic eruption. It is crucial to follow the recommended safety guidelines before, during, and after a potential eruption to ensure the well-being of yourself and your community.
Before an eruption, stay informed by regularly checking updates from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and local authorities. Prepare an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, masks, goggles, a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, and important documents. Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and safe locations, and plan with your family, practicing the evacuation route in advance.
During the eruption, follow evacuation orders immediately if instructed by authorities. If evacuation is not required, stay indoors to avoid exposure to ash and hazardous materials. Use N95 masks or a damp cloth to cover your nose and mouth, wear long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin, and avoid driving, as ashfall can reduce visibility and make roads slippery. Stay away from river valleys and low-lying areas that may be prone to volcanic mudflows.
After the eruption, wait for the all-clear from authorities before returning home. When cleaning up, use protective gear and wet the ash before sweeping to prevent it from becoming airborne. Continue to monitor health and safety updates, particularly regarding air quality, and be mindful of respiratory issues, seeking medical attention if needed.
By staying alert and following these guidelines, you can help ensure your safety and the safety of your community during volcanic events such as a potential eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.
