ACCLIMATION (Part 1)

So, you've just brought home a new leafy friend! But what's the next step? Let's dive into the exciting world of plant acclimation and why it's as important as picking the perfect pot.

First, let us discuss the meaning of ACCLIMATION. Acclimation is the process where plants gradually adjust to new environmental conditions, like changes in temperature, light, or soil. It's crucial for their health and success when moving them to different places. During acclimation, plants undergo changes to adapt, helping them cope with the new environment and thrive in it.

Proper acclimation of plants is crucial for their successful establishment and long-term health, especially when transitioning them from one environment to another, such as from a nursery to a garden or from indoors to outdoors. Here are several reasons why acclimation is important:

𝟭. 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Plants need time to adapt to changes in temperature and light conditions. Sudden exposure to extreme temperatures or intense sunlight can shock plants and lead to wilting, sunburn, or even death. Gradual acclimation allows plants to adjust their physiological processes, such as photosynthesis and transpiration, to new environmental conditions.

𝟮. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Acclimation helps plants regulate their water uptake and loss. Sudden changes in humidity or soil moisture levels can stress plants, causing root damage or dehydration. Sudden changes in soil composition or pH levels can disrupt nutrient uptake and lead to nutrient deficiencies or toxicities. 𝟰. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Acclimation strengthens plants' natural defense mechanisms against diseases and pests. Sudden changes in environmental conditions can weaken plants and make them more susceptible to attacks by pathogens or pests. Gradual acclimation allows plants to build up resistance by activating defense pathways and producing protective compounds.

𝟱. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: When transplanting seedlings or mature plants, acclimation helps reduce transplant shock. Transplanting can disrupt root systems and cause stress to plants. Gradual acclimation allows plants to recover from transplant shock more effectively by minimizing root damage and promoting new root growth.

𝟲. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗴𝗼𝗿: Proper acclimation promotes healthy growth and vigor in plants. By minimizing stress and allowing plants to adapt gradually to new environments, acclimation enables them to allocate energy towards growth and development rather than stress response. Polynesian Ivy (Procris repens) is a flowering plant that is often cultivated as a houseplant. Polynesian Ivy is also known by the Latin name Pellionia repens. This species is often used in biological demonstrations to teach students about plant biology.

String of hearts (Ceropegia collaricorona subsp. collaricorona) is an evergreen perennial hanging plant named for the heart-shaped, dappled green leaves that trail along the vine. Blooms from late summer to early fall with showy, tubular-shaped purple and cream-colored flowers. When grown indoors, it needs direct and indirect light. If not given enough light, the foliage will become sparse, but too much light can cause irreparable damage.
