Transcend - TICI with funds from Vital Strategies on behalf of Bloomberg Philanthropies organized and conducted a two-day training for trainers on MPOWER on August 21-22, 2024 at Prince Plaza Hotel, Legarda Road, Baguio City.
The training objectives for the participants to be knowledgeable of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on To***co Control (WHO FCTC), MPOWER policy package, smoke cessation, and enforcement; to be equipped with new communication skills; to craft a strategic communication plan; and to plan next steps for the to***co control program. Also, the participants are expected to be the voices of the To***co Control advocacy and program in the Cordillera Region.
The speakers and facilitators were Ms. Jasmin Lagahit, Smoke-Free Project Manager MMDA; Ms. Cecille Agpawa (Team Leader), Ms. Faustina ViriΓ±a (BOT), and Ms. Catherin Toyeng (Communications Officer) of Transcend; and Dr. Donnabel Panes, MO IV and To***co Control Coordinator of Baguio Health Services Office.
A total of 21 members (CSC-CAR, Baguio HSO, BJMP La Trinidad and Baguio City, DepEd CAR and Baguio, PTA Federation Baguio, DOH-CAR, SK Baguio and La Trinidad, and DILG-CAR) of the Cordillera Regional To***co Prevention and Control Network (RTPCN) members joined the training.

The study found out that 22.5% identify themselves as smokers in Kalinga.

To***co Survey held today at Grand Zion Garden Resort Hotel, the Kalinga Provincial Health Office reported that pneumonia is leading cause of death in the province for the year 2023.

The Province of Kalinga-Provincial Health Office, Kalinga State University (KSU), and the Department of Education Kalinga and Tabuk City collaborates for the conduct of the 2024 Kalinga To***co Youth Survey.
The survey is a self-administered and school-based survey among 13 to 15 years of age learners. It is designed to monitor prevalence of cigarette smoking and other to***co use; knowledge and attitudes towards cigarette smoking; role of the media and advertising; and cessation. It serves as a baseline for the enhancement and effective implementation of the To***co Control Program in the province.
Attended during the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing were Dr. Marilyn Duyan, PHO I; Dr. Eduardo Bagtang, KSU President; Dr. Ferdinand Ganotice, KSU Research Services Director; Ms. Ginadine Balagso, OIC DepEd-Division of Kalinga; and Dr. Ma. Veronica Calpito, MO DepEd-Division of Kalinga.
Transcend is to provide technical assistance when needed during the conduct of the survey.
The MOA signing was held on August 2024 at the Grand Zion Hotel, Tabuk City, Kalinga.

The Smoke-Free Task Force of Kapangan with technical assistance from Transcend crafted the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the Municipal Ordinance 194 s. 2023 or the Comprehensive Smoke-Free Ordinance of Kapangan on August 9, 2024 at the Executive Hall, Municipap Hall, Lomon, Kapangan, Benguet.
The consultation meeting was headed and facilitated by Dr. Mary Joy Fermin, MHO; Coun. Jennylyn Ebes, SB on Health; and Ms. Cecille Agpawa, Transcend Team Leader.
A total of 18, including staff from Transcend, joined and participated in the said activity.

Adriste Philippines Inc. organized an information dissemination session focusing on Smoke-Free Workplace on August 7, 2024.
Atty. Ron Perez, PTA Cordillera Federation President and PAV Baguio Chapter Coordinator discussed the overview of COB 34 s 37 or the Smoke-Free Baguio Ordinance, the best practices and challenges in the implementation and the Parents Against V**e (PAV) while Ms. Catherin Cimatu-Toyeng, Transcend Communications Officer, tackled the health impacts of smoking, va**ng, and betel quid chewing and the benefits of a smoke-free workplace.
A total of 178 workers and staff attended the info session.
In 2019, the Baguio City Economic Zone (BCEZ) was declared as the first to declare Revolution Smoke-Free or Smoke-Free Workplace in the country. It was attended by other agencies and partners such as the World Health Organization Philippines.
In observation of August National Lung Month, PSPHP presents " : Public Health Initiatives in To***co and Ni****ne Control" on August 17, 2024, 2pm-5pm, via Zoom (with CPD) and PSPHP page (no CPD).
This FREE webinar has 2.5 PRC CPD points for physicians and 2.5 CPD points for nurses.
