Rain falls down,
Streets turn into rivers,
Umbrellas become boats,
Yet college life still delivers.
In these early college days,
We thought itโd be just books and grades,
But no one warned us about the floods,
Where growing fins and tails is how weโre made.
While kids stay sound at home,
High schoolers snug in their beds,
Weโve become pros at wading through,
Evolving from waders to swimmers instead.
Here lies the challenge of societyโs game,
Weโre forced to evolve into what they proclaim,
To fit their mold of resilience we strive,
As if mere survival is how we come alive.
Have we grown too used to this chance?
Are we so practiced at braving floods
That we forgot to ask the wise,
Is being this resilient truly a must, or just for the odds?

Sa simula, tila laro ang lahat,
Puno ng kagalakan at pananabik.
"Apat na taon mula ngayon,
Makaka-graduate na at magiging inhinyero na rin."
Unang sabak, gyera agad.
Calculus ang pinapatos,
Pinagod at sinagad,
Tinadtad mula ikalawang taon hanggang makapagtapos.
Statics, mechanicsโ
Aguy, malala!

In times of need, they are missing.
Instead, they are found celebrating and partying.
While some are on the table,
With the big man, sitting, doing nothing.
While people are struggling and inching for hope,
Those who heard the voices rapidly answered with their boat.
The Boat of Hope is something the big man cannot bestow.
Then, the question arises, โWho is held accountable?โ
The big man must answer, for he couldโve done the same.
For their actions lead to ignorance and incompetence.
Thus, the question cannot be answered by finger-pointing,
It should be by accepting the consequences of their actions.
Seated at the same table,
The very people who should be held accountable.
People suffered for their duties unfulfilled.
And sadly, the men in the big chairs are no big men.

wala akong iba pang daan,
na dadalhin ka sa nais mong puntahan.

I never thought I would meet you again
Oh darkness, my old friend
I feel a shallow comfort as I dwell in you
As much as I hate being with you
And I know I shouldnโt be staying any longer with you
The radiance of the sky is not enough to melt the dim hue
But the evil in this world makes me clasp my wings
And I pity myself for not rejecting the serpentsโ stings.
My old shadows are lingering
As I await for someone to light a burning.
But no one has come to do the lifting
From this deep dark pit that catch me falling
And again,
I find myself
Yearning for that hopeful kindness
Despite the misery
the world had gave me
Iโll see myself rising
And yet the past will keep me dragging
Help me stretch my body
Is there someone who can set me free?

Behind every aspiring engineer is a strong foundation in mathematics -- a notion proven true by 20 School of Engineering and Architecture students as they vied for the title of the ultimate math wizard in the School of Engineering and Architecture Honor Society's (SEAHS) MATHSTERS 2024: Battle of the Math Masters at the SIRIB Center, Otto Hahn Building, Saint Louis University, last October 19.
Ultimately, mathematician by heart Neil Venci Dale D. Gao-ay of Chemical Engineering (ChE) secured the back-to-back championship for Category A (1st-2nd years), while three Civil Engineering (CE) math masters topped Category B (3rd-5th years) in the three-round competition.
This victory marks Gao-ayโs second consecutive win, followed by Ryleigh Gavriel M. Acosta (chemical engineering student), who ranked secondโโand Maverick Raphael M. Acpal (electronics engineering student) thirdโโconcluding with scores 63, 55, and 40, respectively.
โItโs really about my identity as a mathematician by heart. Because itโs really my math skills that propelled me to who I am today,โ Gao-ay said.
Meanwhile, the CE department dominated Category B, with Franz Rudolf P. Ruiz, a four-timer achiever of the MATHSERS, as champion, Kasler Dell O. Abansi as second, and Joaquin Gabriel C. Ang as third, scoring 60, 56, and 43 respectively.
So, parang hinahanap ko na yung thrill ng competition and excitement during quiz proper,โ said Ruiz.
In addition, the top three winners of each category were given Karce KC-S991โPRC-approved calculators and cash prizes.
Serving as the judges for the quiz show were Engr. Mary Zennia Bondad of the Department of Civil Engineering, Engr. Katelyn Gabon of the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Engr. Bea_Ann Andaya of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
MATHSTERS is an annual mathematics quiz show competition spearheaded by the SEAHS, which is currently in leadership of Sydney Jes Montemayor, the president of the organization.
โI think very (successful) naman 'yung event since nairaos naman namin. Although there are some difficulties na nangyari such as the technical difficulties, nagkaroon ng problem sa projectorsโฆpowerpoints but overall naging smooth naman yung flow ng event,โ said Montemayor.
Furthermore, Montemayor thanked the organizational members, participants, judges, and Karce Calculators Philippines โsponsor of the competition prize.
