-it is also an Igorot name of a strong woman from Sagada from which the name of the coffee shop is inspired from

Cafe Kayman was established in 2016 originally as a complement to the old Botique Shop opened a year prior in downtown Baguio. The unique coffee shop and botique combination was loved by new and regular customers and was eventually established mainly as a coffee shop later on. Supporting the local coffee industry was and still is the main advocacy through transparency and the promotion of quality coffee that was fairly processed from the farm to the consumer.

With the 2020 pandemic hitting them rock bottom, they reconstructed their business model from thriving with the hustle and bustle of the city to a more relaxed and chill environment away from it. Today, with the same hardworking staff, they are more committed than ever to providing their guests with grub and unwinding they came all the way to the city outskirts for.

September 13 marks the commemoration of the 1986 Sipat Peace Talks between the Government under then President Corazon Aquino and the Cordillera People’s Liberation Army under the leadership of the former rebel priest Conrado “Ka Ambo” Balweg. The 1986 Sipat Peace Talks happened in Mount Data Hotel in Bauko, Mountain Province.

“Sipat” means in the local dialect in the Cordillera as “peace agreement”. This is an indigenous practice in the Cordillera region which is initially done before a peace pact between tribes are forged.

The 1986 Sipat agreement was the initial process towards peace between the government and the CPLA. The Sipat peace talks ultimately led to the creation of the Cordillera Administrative region by virtue of Executive Order No. 220 issued on July 15, 1986.

The area now known as Baguio City was first called Kafagway and occupied by the Kankaney and Ibaloi tribes of the Cordilleras.

During the Spanish occupation of the Philippines, the colonizers conducted a series of expeditions, led by Juan Salcedo in 1572 and Don Q. M. Quirante in 1694 to the cool mountains of Benguet. A series of failed attempts to conquer the natives were made until foothold was finally gained by Commandante de Galvey in 1846, when he was able to establish a commandancia or military garrison in a beautiful stretch of fertile flat land. The 'presidentia' (civil government) was first established in the Guisad Valley area. It was later moved to the present site of the Baguio City Hall.

During the American occupartion, the members of the five-man Taft Commission, including Luke Wright, climbed way up north in search for a cool place and were rewarded with the discovery of fresh pine growths among rolling beautiful hills, and Baguio was found.

A development plan was laid out and roads were built, followed by a survey for a railroad to Baguio. The Commission assigned Major Lyman Kennon to supervise the building of the road cut through rock cliffs to open a route to Baguio, which was later named after him.

In 1903, the Americans declared Baguio the Summer Capital of the Philippines and as the residence of the American governor-general to escape Manila's summer heat.

Baguio was developed further by the Americans by building parks and public structures such as the Wright Park in honor of Governor General Luke E. Wright, and the Burnham Park in honor of Baguio city planner Daniel Burnham.

On September 1, 1909, Baguio, then a municipality of Benguet was declared a chartered city by virtue of Act No. 1963. Then Governor General William Cameron Forbes directed Justice George Malcolm to write the city's charter.

The name of the city is derived from the word "bagiw" in Ibaloi, the indigenous language of the Benguet Region meaning "moss."

With JCI Baguio Sunflower's pursuit to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change, we bring you YLEA-CAR Summit to give recognition to deserving graduating Senior High School students and to inspire them toward greater achievements in life.

The YLEA Program will once again honor commendable SHS students who demonstrated exemplary performance in their academic and leadership feat this June 25, 2022 at Sto. Tomas National High School, Baguio City.
