Helen Biangalen Magata of Tebtebba addressing the President of France, Emmanuel Macron in the #IndigenousPeoples seven socio-cultural regions meeting today, December 2, 2023 in the ongoing #COP28 #COP28UAE. Magata was speaking on behalf of the Indigenous Peoples caucus of Asia. Other representatives from other regions also delivered their messages. Below is the the message from Asia: Good morning Mr. President. I am Helen Magata from the Philippines We appreciate your pronouncement yesterday in the high level dialogue on climate finance that there is a need not only for more money but for the smarter utilization of money and that this should be decided by those in-charge- and that we should follow national approach. Oftentimes, national approach does not include indigenous peoples priorities- we get diluted or even get lost in national priorities. You are well aware, Mr President that IPs protect 80% of the worlds biodiversity. So if you ask us who should be in charge in decision-making for indigenous Peoples, it shoul be us, indigenous peoples. Climate finance should focus more on Non Market Based Solution instead of market based. Globally, there's a lot of initiatives, including IP led solutions already been done in local level These need to be supported to a scale that matters for global solution. Lastly, I come from a country and region that is deadliest country for land and environmental defenders, with 281 deaths over the past decade, most of whom are indigenous peoples. We hope you will help remind others that saving the planet should not come at the expense of the lives of those in the frontlines, the IPs.
