Among the values and principles of social workers, social justice and human rights remain as the defining mark of the profession. Few have exemplified such commitment to promoting equality and servitude for the disadvantaged. Among them, and who stands as one of the finest examples of social justice, is St. Martin de Porres.
Born in Lima, Peru (then a colony of Spain) on 9 December 1579, St. Martin was the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed slave of Native American and African descent. His Spanish father abandoned his family when Martin's sister was born, leaving their mother to fend for them. Martin wanted to be a priest but Spanish law at the time forbade mixed-race individuals from fully joining religious orders.
Undeterred, Martin asked the Dominicans of Holy Rosary in Lima to accept him as a 'Donado', a volunteer tasked with doing menial tasks for the order. He spent years at the Holy Rosary, and finally, his superior permitted him to profess his religious vows and become a Dominican.
As a newly professed priest, he was not fully accepted by his peers. He faced discrimination and was called a mulatto, a derogatory term similar to Indio. Yet he carried on with his priestly duties, ministering to both Spanish nobles and African slaves alike. Once when their convent was in debt, he remarked 'sell me as I am just a poor mulatto'.
St. Martin de Porres was also known for his work in caring for the sick and promoting the rights of non-whites. From the age of 34 until his deat at 59, he was assigned at the infirmary. Once, an ulcerated beggar who was almost naked stretched his hand to Martin who promptly took him to his bed. When a colleague chided him for the act, he responded 'Compassion, my dear Brother, is preferable to cleanliness'.
When an epidemic struck his city, he cared for 60 sick friars. He was the only one who did not fear the contagion of the virus. In another account of St. Martin's dedication to compassion, he tended for a mortally wounded Indian against his superior's orders. For him, mercy and charity preceded that of obedience.
St. Martin is also a vegetarian who constantly requested alms for the poor. He also set up one of the first homes for abandoned children and orphans in Lima. Towards the end of his life, St. Martin still took great care of the disadvantaged and broke the barriers set by society for being a mixed-race individual. A trailblazer of what true public service is, he was canonized in 1962 by Pople John XXIII.
The life and works of St. Martin de Porres is worthy of emulation by us, future promoters of social justice. He refused to see people with labels and he gave greater attention to the sick, poor, and victims of injustice. He is an example of initiative, involvement, and genuine interest for societal development.
We can take a page from his book and approach those who need us. That mendicant on the street, the busker under the sun's fiery heat, the struggling PWD or senior citizen who wants to cross the road. St. Martin would approach and help them without question. He took great notice of his community and made sure that people were seen, not merely looked at.
In our setting where indigenous peoples and the lower class are constantly exploited, St. Martin will also not hesitate to question the government and other higher entities for their inaction and for deliberately exacerbating their condition. He will call them out.
St. Martin de Porres showed us how much of an impact can one person do in bringing people closer to justice and equity. That even an illegitimate child raised by a single mother and grew up in a racist environment can still be the person who will bring change. That it does not take grand plans, money, and ambition to provide people with a better life. It is the simplest of things that bring people hope.
Empowerment, direct action, advocacy, human rights, and social justice. St. Martin de Porres showed us how to live the values of social work. It is a commitment and a challenge that every day, there is something we can do. Your social upbringing, race, gender, or creed won't be your defining moment. It is your response to your circumstances and the world you live in. Make someone's life better starting today. One day, one life at a time.

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, also known as St. Elizabeth of Thuringia, lived in the 13th century and is recognized for her charitable works and devotion to serving the poor and sick. While she may not be traditionally considered a missionary in the sense of traveling to distant lands to spread religious beliefs, her life marked a mission of compassion and service to those in need.
St. Elizabeth was born into Hungarian royalty and married to Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia. Despite her noble status, she dedicated herself to helping the less fortunate. She used her resources to establish hospitals and orphanages, providing care for the sick and needy. Elizabeth embraced a life of personal sacrifice, living in simplicity and humility. She sold her luxurious possessions and used the proceeds to fund her charitable endeavors. By doing so, she exemplified a commitment to the Christian virtues of poverty and selflessness.
Her devotion to the sick was particularly notable. She often personally tended to those suffering from illnesses, going so far as to wash the feet of the frail and provide them with comfort and companionship. Her hands-on approach to caregiving demonstrated her genuine concern for the well-being of others. She even used her wealth to establish hospitals where the sick could receive medical attention and care. These institutions became centers of compassion and healing, embodying her commitment to others.
While St. Elizabeth of Hungary may not have traveled to foreign lands to spread Christianity, her missionary work was grounded in the teachings of love, compassion, and selfless service found in the Christian faith. Her legacy endures as a model of Christian charity and a testament to the transformative power of personal sacrifice for the well-being of others.

We have successfully campaigned for the ๐๐พ๐๐พ 2023 ๐๐ค๐ค๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ก๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ค๐ค๐ฉ๐๐ง๐๐๐๐๐จ in collaboration with ๐๐๐๐ง, ๐๐๐ง๐! as the first-ever university-wide campaign. As we express our concerns, we strengthen our collective aspirations to form a better world for the future generation. Our unified call, "๐ฝ๐๐ฉ๐, ๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ค ๐ ๐๐ข๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ฅ๐๐๐จ๐๐๐ค๐ก ๐ข๐ค!" ๐ฃ๐ป

In the heart of the National Children's Month Celebration 2023, the Prime Movers Society joined the nationwide activities, bringing the voice of every advocate for children's welfare to the university through
As future social workers, we commit ourselves to ensuring a progressive collective narrative that protects and promotes children's rights and welfare, molding communities toward an inclusive future for every child.
We extend our utmost gratitude to all Louisians who expressed their sentiments on the social realities that affect children at present through our project, ๐๐๐๐ง ๐๐๐ง๐!, with the theme, "๐๐ช๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฆ ๐๐ง๐ง๐ฆ๐ค๐ต: ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ ๐๐ค๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด, ๐๐ช๐จ ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ข๐ค๐ต" campaigning with the official hashtag #๐๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฝ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ด๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐๐ฎ. Indeed, with our one voice, we manifest in our actions daily our unified call, "๐ฝ๐๐ฉ๐, ๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ค ๐ ๐๐ข๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ฅ๐๐๐จ๐๐๐ค๐ก ๐ข๐ค!" ๐ป

As we stand on the threshold of 2024, let's carry the lessons and scars of 2023 with grace. Life has a way of teaching us, sometimes through tears, but with every dawn comes the promise of a new beginning. Embrace the unknown with courage, for within the challenges lie the seeds of growth. ๐ซ
May this New Year be a journey of ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ, ๐ด๐ฆ๐ญ๐ง-๐ฅ๐ช๐ด๐ค๐ฐ๐ท๐ฆ๐ณ๐บ, and ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ด๐ช๐ญ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ. In the tapestry of time, let our stories be woven with threads of compassion, strength, and unwavering hope. Cheers to a year where we rise from the ashes, stronger and more compassionate than ever. [SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY STUDENT ORGANIZATIONSโ MANIFESTO OF UNITY AGAINST JEEPNEY PHASEOUT]
