In celebration of the International Day of Light 2024, we are proud to announce this year’s outreach event.

With the theme, “𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗴/𝗦𝘂𝗴𝗮: 𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀,” senior high school students from Baguio City and Baybay City, Leyte will enjoy workshops, talks, and other fun activities related to Optics and Photonics.

The Baguio City leg of the outreach will be held at San Vicente National High School on May 20th, 2024. It will be graced by Dr. Crismar Patacsil as he will share his insights and expertise in the field of light physics.

Details for the Baybay City segment of the outreach will be announced as soon as possible.

Siyentista ng Bayan, gear yourselves up as we launch our College of Science Week 2024, with the theme “𝙏𝙚𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙃𝙄𝙍𝘼𝙔𝘼! 𝙀𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨, 𝙄𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨: 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚!".

The UPB USC College of Science Committee upholds that Science shall serve the people! The conscious choice of serving the people shall first and foremost be the guiding star for every Siyentista ng Bayan. In a society wherein science and technology continue to thrive and at the same time are threatened, we must stand firm for science and technology that is for the masses.

Despite the budget cuts and lack of funding for science and technology, we continue to assert and demand that the government should see the fullest potential of our industry by allocating enough funds for people in the field. We also condemn the attacks faced by our scientists whose interest only lies in the development of the country. Let's not forget what happened to Leonard Co and continue to call for the protection of our Filipino scientists. Environmental defenders from the Cordillera region are no different from these attacks as numerous developmental aggression projects are primed to help the community but otherwise will only destroy the Indigenous peoples' communities situated in areas being reclaimed by foreign multinational corporations. Despite the environmental concerns pressed by researchers and environmental defenders, these companies continue to conduct these development aggressions.

The socio-political landscape of our country calls for the Siyentista ng Bayan to ensure that the developments being aided by science and technology are beneficial and accessible to all. Research and innovations shall be directed toward addressing the pressing issues faced by society, particularly those that are marginalized and disregarded.

Siyentista ng Bayan, let's amplify our calls and make science serve the people this coming College of Science Week 2024. Join us at KA Building and Court A from March 18-22, 2024, and watch out for the following events!

We would like to send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Henry Ramos, an alumnus and former faculty member of the University of the Philippines Baguio, who passed away last March 11, 2024.

Before becoming an internationally recognized scientist in the field of Plasma Physics and Technology, Dr. Ramos finished his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics-Physics at UP Baguio in the early 1970s. He later on became a Mathematics instructor in the university during the early 1980s. He was also a wise mentor and adviser to several Physics faculty members of UP Baguio.

May he rest in peace and love. His spirit and contribution to the field of Science will always be remembered.

The 5th International Symposium of the Vacuum Society of the Philippines (ISVSP 2024) will host the Focus Group Discussion to develop a Plasma Research and Development Roadmap for the Philippines. The discussion will engage experts to chart strategic plans and recommendations for plasma science advancement nationwide. Registration details for conference and focus group attendees will be announced soon. We look forward to connecting with the vacuum science and plasma technology community in beautiful Baguio City!

Mula sa mga prinsipyong dinadala hanggang sa mga proyektong isinasagawa, malaki ang impluwensiya ng mga nagdaang taon sa kung paano sila kumikilos sa kasalukuyan.
