The roster of accomplishments continues as the Varsity’s contingent shined brightly in the recently concluded Delhi Debates 2024, held last July 13-14.

🌟Oarben Balicoco, the current Chairperson of the Varsity, has demonstrated his knack and proficiency in adjudication by leaving an indelible mark as an invited adjudicator during the tournament. His success as a judge allowed him to participate as a judge in the open quarter finals.

The Varsity is brimming with pride and joy as its members continuously excel in each competition they engage in. This success is attributed to their relentless perseverance and inherent resilience, an eternal trademark of the Varsity.

The UPB Debate Varsity congratulates its contingent for acing every round and cementing their placements during the Summer Debate Symposium last July 6-7.

🌟Heleina Trillanes continues to make waves in the arena of adjudication as they secured the Overall Best Judge award. Along with that, they became the chair for both Open and Novice Grand Finals.

🌟Additionally, Oarben Balicoco and Ron Bunsoy undauntedly pushed through the elimination rounds, making them the 8th Open Breaking Team and reach the Open Semi Finals of the competition.

The laurels and recognition bagged by our contingent are testaments to the Varsity’s unrelenting dedication and commitment to representing the University with excellence in every tournament it enters. Hear! Hear!

The varsity's contingent displayed their unrelenting wit and expertise in debating, shining brightly in the recently concluded North Luzon British Parliamentary held on June 15-16.

🌟Starting the line up of victories, Seah Galacinao, the former Chairperson of the Varsity, was honored to be part of the Adjudication Core. Their contribution left an indelible mark and contributed to the overall success of the event.

🌟Following that, Heleina Trillanes showcased their unmatched prowess in adjudicating and secured the second-best judge position in the entire competition. This led them to chair the novice grand finals and serve as a judge in the open grand finals.

🌟Moving to our speaking contingent, Ysabella Padua and Charlene Lopez broke 4th in the novice category and advanced to the semi-finals during the outrounds. This feat serves as a true testament to their incomparable grit and knack in debating.

🌟Making their way back into the debating arena, alumni Tim Ang and Niko Aguilar continued the varsity's tradition of excellence by breaking 8th in the Open Category and making it to the Quarterfinals.

🌟Christian Santos and Josh Medez also managed to secure the 3rd Open Reserve Team placement after they successfully conquered five grueling rounds of elimination.

After a month long streak of back to back wins, the Debate Varsity has decided to show off their trophies 🏆 and rankings 🥇 through a compilation of all their well deserving members and trainees! Below are the following individuals that deserve a special shoutout for this month 🥳

Starting off strong, our very own Chairperson, Seah Galacinao, proudly represented the varsity last April 6-7 at the Southern Luzon Inter High School Debate Encounter (SLIDE UP) XV!

Not only was he given the pristine honor of being called an Invited Adjudicator, he demonstrated his debating prowess as the Open Quarter Finals Judge and Makiling Cup Finals Judge respectively.

And just a few days later, DebVar brought back another memorable victory for the books in the Maynila Asian Parliamentary (MAP) last April 13-14.

Through the efforts of Ron Bunsoy, Alexandra Uyao, and Christian Santos, they were hailed as the OVERALL NOVICE GRANDS CHAMPION—a huge milestone for each of their respective debate journeys 🙌

Their team advanced to the succeeding rounds as the 2nd Novice Breaking Team. However, a special recognition must be given to Ron Bunsoy, as he was crowned Novice Finals Best Speaker in the competiiton 👑

As for our adjudicators, Oarben Balicoco made his mark in the tournament, not only as an Invited Adjudicator, but also as an Open Semifinals Judge. On the other hand, Rosh Soriano, one of the varsity’s well-established trainees, was granted the chance to be an Open Grandfinals Judge, and was even awarded as the 8th Best Adjudicator in MAP 💰

Moving forward, another prestigious competition occurred last April 27-28, otherwise known as the Philippine Debate Open (PDO). A tournament that is known where only the best of the best competiting.

And UPB’s DebVar offered just that. With our very own Ysabella Padua participating, she successfully broke to be one of the Open Grandfinals Judge, and was deservingly identified to be the 6th Best Judge in PDO ☝️

Additionally, Ron Bunsoy, who chose to compete once again in spite of his impressive track record recently, was even hailed as the 4th Best Novice Speaker in spite after bowing out with his team after breaks 💪

Now, although not technically occurring during April, a special shoutout must still be given for those who had just recently participated from the Ateneo Eco Debates last May 4-5—another highly esteemed debate competition!

To start off, Oarben Balicoco made his way through the competition, ready and minds sharpened ⚔️

Alongside his partner, they successfully broke as the 13th Highest Open Breaking Team, and reach their way all the way to the top as Open Grand Finalists 💥

Meanwhile, Heleina Trillanes, another up and coming trainee, made another impressive accomplishment by successfully breaking, and reaching all the way to the Quarterfinals as an esteemed adjudicator 🗣️

The UP Debate Varsity dominated last March 23-24 in the Northwestern Round Robin (NRR), with a full CONTINGENT BREAK 💋 and each member making FINALS appearances as debaters and judges respectively🏆

We would like to thank all the organizers for hosting this event, as well as reaching out to UPB DebVar for the prestigious invitation 🫶

Moving forward, a huge congratulations to Seah Galacinao and Heleina Trillanes for being the OVERALL GRAND CHAMPIONS, FIRST BREAKING TEAM, as well as receiving their own subsequent special awards 💪 It is also worth noting that that this is trainee Heleina’s first college tournament appearance and break 🥳

Furthermore, Seah, DebVar’s very own Chairperson, was crowned as the Overall Best Speaker. On the other hand, Heleina was hailed as the Open Grand Finals Best Speaker and 3rd Best Open Speaker.

For Ron Bunsoy and Ruvic Sanculi’s team, they were able to break as the 2nd Highest Team and reach the Open Grand Finals.

Ron Bunsoy was recognized as the 4th Best Open Speaker while Ruvic was regarded as the 6th Best Open Speaker.

Last but certainly not least, Alex Uyao and Tiano Santos’ team were the 3rd Open Breaking Team as well as competed as Open Grand Finalist.

Alex was proudly acknowledged as the 2nd Best Open Speaker while Tiano was regarded as the 5th Best Open Speaker.

To add to such an impressive list of accomplishments, our very own Ysabella Padua was also awarded as the OVERALL BEST ADJUDICATOR and was given the honor to chair the High School Grand Finals.

Finally, Oarben Balicoco made his own mark in the tournament as being apart of the highly prestigious Core Adjudicating panel.

Another DebVar Classic 👑

Once again, Oarben Balicoco has made the Debate Varsity proud 💪 participating in the Intertext Asian Parliamentary Debate Open last February 3-4, this time showing his prowess in the debating scene.

In this international competition, Oarben, alongside his fellow constituents, successfully broke in the Novice Category as the 3rd highest ranking team. Not only that, but they were able to reach the Novice Grand Finals and humbly concluded their run.

DEBVAR STUNS IN A NEW SELFIE 🤳 📸

The UPB Debate Varsity has done it again with a ✨️FULL CONTINGENT BREAK✨️ at the Athena Intervarsity Invitational Debate Tournament (AVID) last January 26-28.

Firstly, we would like to acknowledge one of our newest trainees: Joshua Medez 🔥 Not only was this his first ever debate tournament and subsequently his first break, he was recognized as the 5th Best Novice Speaker and 7th Best Open Speaker during the award ceremony.

Furthermore, our Secretary and Communications Officer, Pilar Toribio, was also awarded as the 7th Best Novice Speaker and 9th Best Open Speaker amongst all her fellow AVID participants.

Additionally, our very own Chairperson, Seah Galacinao, was given the honorable pleasure to be part of AVID’s Adjudication Core. Not only did he successfully break as a judge and oversee many of the rounds, but he was just one of the members of the AVID team that made the entire competition possible.

Pilar and her partner, Christian Santos, also had a fantastic run—being hailed as the 6th Open Breaking team during the special announcements. After back-to-back wins throughout the Pre-Semis and Semifinals respectively, they both qualified as Grand Finalists 🏆 and proudly ended their run in the Finals.

Joshua and his partner, Marcus Flores, proved that they were a force to be reckoned with early in the competition—being hailed as the 2nd Open Breaking team during the special announcements. This automatically qualified them as Semi-Finalists 🏆 wherein they humbly ended their run.

Even before the start of the Second Semester, DebVar has shown its hard work 💪 diligence ✍️ and commitment 🤝 to the sport.

COMEBACK IS REAL✨️ 🎀

The Debate Varsity had a tremendous start to the year ⚔️ Our very own Chairperson, Ysaiah Galacinao, participated in the Philippine Schools Debate Championship (PSDC) last January 11-14, 2024.

PSDC is the premier national debate competition for students, gathering only the best of the best debaters and adjudicators to compete.

After a rigorous application process, Ysaiah was given the honor to be an invited judge—a feat only a few members of the varsity have achieved before. Additionally, he was able reach the Ana Alano Semi Finals as an adjudicator and oversee the rounds.

For Honor and Glory 🏛️

Before the year ended, the gods were able to bless the Debate Varsity once more 🔥 With Athena’s wisdom 🧠 and Poseidon’s wrath 🔱 our proud members and trainees left a blaze of triumph this December.

Firstly, we would like to congratulate our newest trainees: Rosh Soriano, Ruvic Sanculi and Xian Calagui for their outstanding performance in the North Luzon Online Debates (NLOD). These were their first college debate experiences, as well as first breaks!

Ruvic was able to bag the 1st reserve slot with his team, while Xian made it to the Open Quarterfinals. Her team placed 16th in the Open Team break category.

However, not only was Rosh able to adjudicate the Open Grandfinals, but he was also hailed as the 10th overall Best Judge in the awarding ceremony.

In the same competition, our bonafide members left quite an impressive mark as well.

Partnered with Xian, Marcus Flores was able to reach the Quarterfinals, and was placed as the 16th Open Breaking team.

On the other hand, Rianne Banzuela, Christian Santos and Oarben Balicoco fought valiantly—reaching as far as the Octofinals as the 12th Open Breaking team.

Prior to NLOD, Oarben joined the Diliman Schools BP last December 16-17 as an invited adjudicator! Recognized for his adjudicating prowess, he was also able to judge the Open Quarterfinals.

Last but certainly not the least, Ron Bunsoy and Kleia Austria ended their run as NLOD’s 1st Reserve Breaking team alongside Ruvic—an impressive feat for their undeterred efforts!

A special shout-out to Kleia as well for her first ever break in a college debate tournament.

Not only that, but our very own Ysabella Padua was able to place herself as one of the Reserve Adjudicators in the competition—showcasing her skills once again as a well-decorated judge in the debate community.

DebVar’s finest blazed through the Luzon Intervarsity (LIV) last November 11-13, with a near full adjudicator break!

The Luzon Intervarsity is hailed as one of the nation’s most esteemed debate competitions, with various institutions sending their best of the best to compete. Therefore, we would like to personally thank the University of the Philippines Baguio for subsidizing all tournament related expenses for the participants mentioned. It was an honor to represent the school.

For our adjudicators, Ron Bunsoy and Anna Abigail Ticzon had proudly finished their run as Open Semifinals Judges. On the other hand, Ysabella Padua reached as far as Open Grandfinals Judge, showing her adjudicating prowess.

To add to this, our very own Oarben Balicoco amazed the contingents and was given the honor to be the Open Grandfinals Chair.

Due to personal reasons, former V.C for Projects Charlene Lopez has chosen to step down from her position. We wish her the very best in her debate journey 💙
