Did you know speech and language are two different things? It’s true! You can produce speech without using language rules and communicate with language sans speech (like I’m doing as I type this up!)
Most people talk about kids who are late to talk as having a speech delay, and while sometimes it is speech related, it’s more often a language delay- or combination.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s in depth look into both speech AND language differences commonly seen in Autism (I bet you’ll be surprised!)
Love always wins.
Love wins. All the time. ❤️
"I went to the adventure park this morning with my son. It's one of our few safe places because nobody is usually there, so my son isn't very anxious.
He always enjoys running up and down the sand dunes others have built, and each time he does I think about the kids that put so much effort into building them. I feel guilty that my boy loves watching them crumble...
Today it was just my son and I for a minute before numerous bikes and little men arrived. My anxiety was immediately present, and I was trying to encourage my son to get off so the other boys could use the dunes.
(My boy was holding a feather duster by the way. It's his favorite stim right now.)
I quickly apologized and explained my son has autism and is non-verbal. Before I could finish explaining, all the boys reassured me it was fine, they love rebuilding the dunes, and that Rory should stay.
Over the next half hour each boy interacted with my son, asked me about him, and kept encouraging him.
One boy who was wearing an orange shirt asked me if my son Rory had a bike. I said yes but that he is unable to ride it yet.
The boy told me to bring his bike next time. He said my son might give it a try if he watches them. 'I think he would like it,' he added.
Behind my sunglasses, my eyes were filled with tears, and my heart was full of faith.
April is Autism Acceptance Month and it's moments like this that help educate our future leaders about people living with a disability, which cannot always be seen.
When we left, I thanked the boys for letting Rory continue running up and down the dunes and for being so kind and accepting of him.
Again, they were all lovely and said they were looking forward to hanging out with him again soon.
Walking home, I noticed my son was smiling and happy. As was I.
From a mom who also has a lovely little boy, who carries a feather duster, thank your lovely boys for me."

When James Martin (left) was born, his family were told he may never speak. Now, not only does he never shut up, according to his dad Ivan, but he has become the first star with Down's syndrome ever to win an Oscar. 👏 When An Irish Goodbye was announced winner of Best Short Film, co-director Tom Berkeley told the audience that it was also James' birthday, asking them to sing to him. ❤ His proud dad said: "All I ever wanted for James was that he'd be happy... It's just crazy... there were a few tears shed but what an achievement, just delighted." Congratulations and happy birthday, James! 🎉
Whether you're on the spectrum or not, we all need support and courage to achieve our dreams. 👏🎉

Rethinking "attention-seeking behavior" as connection-seeking or relationship-seeking behavior can really help us parent proactively! It not only helps us remember where to direct our attention, it also challenges us to focus on the quality of the time we spend with our children.
And hey, if this feels like a bit of stepping on your toes - ME TOO! Distractions are a normal part of life, and sometimes we're only halfway listening to their story or only have one foot in their world. That's *normal*! This is a good reminder to focus on being fully present today.
LESS (OR NO) screen time. Let them out into the real world to get all sweaty and laughing and problem solving their way out of obstacles with you and with peers.
"Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold."
Joseph Chilton Pearce
So when we say let your child play, we are actually saying, let them learn. Do not burden yourselves too early with flashcards and other commercialized form of learning. Sit with your kids, get dirty with them, and you'll be doing a great service than wasting time and money with flashcards and whatnots.
Compassion. Inclusion. Acceptance.
What a great story!
‘Hey my bro, can I have money for food and clothes?’ I decided to respond. ‘How about I take you out to lunch?’: Man discovers ‘unlikely friendship’ replying to stranger’s message “Brian came jumping out of the door and smiled before bounding over and giving me a very enthusiastic handshake. 'I didn’t think you’d actually come. Thank you so much.’ I knew I’d met a pretty special guy.”
Be on the look out! Ask questions! Be the parent who has lots of questions rather than the one who let the kid be further delayed because of the Filipino mentality of "magsasalita din yan..." Nothing beats early intervention.
LET THE CHILDREN PLAY!
Thank you soon to be elected politicians for advancing the causes of children with disabilities, and to Sec. Panelo for always thinking of them whether in winning or losing.
SALVADOR “SAL PANALO” PANELO
Candidate #50 for Senator

‘Off to the edge of the playground, I saw him. A dad walking closely behind his son, never allowing him to get more than a few feet away.’: Mom shares kind reminder for special needs dad "I saw the son, his mannerisms - the way he walked on his toes, flapped his hands and stimmed. I knew instantly he had autism. He had mannerisms similar to my Gabe. I made my way over to him."
Dear parents:
Some kids need extra sensory input to help keep them regulated. I love these ideas by The OT Butterfly and to incorporate some heavy work into your day!

In the early days, I would have never dreamed his disability would lead me to my happiest life. The beginning was tough as we spent years navigating the unknown.
