Myopia or nearsightedness is an error of refraction causing blurring of vision when seeing at far distance. Simple eyeglasses do not fix the health condition as this will only aggravate the situation. Moreso, as the eye grade continue to increase, so are the potential risks of having eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma, myopic maculopathy or retinal detachment which are all more difficult to manage.

Cycloplegic refraction is one of the most important part of the pediatric eye check-up that we do in our clinic. In this way, the muscles of the eyes that are responsible for focusing to see clearly is temporarily paralyzed to perform another test that will reveal the power or grade of the eyes in a relaxed state.

As a result, a patient who, for example, before this test is nearsighted of -3.00 becomes +1.00!!! If this is the case, an optometrist's best clinical judgement is crucial at this point considering all the other optometric evaluations before arriving to a correct lens prescription which is not revealed in ordinary refraction (usually done by sitting down the exam room, reading that chart while placing lenses to improve vision and get the glasses right away the same day).

For your child's next eye check-up, ask for a cycloplegic refraction. It only takes 3 eye drops to arrive to a correct diagnosis and management for a healthier and better vision! 🤓

The photo below shows different ways to correct myopia or nearsightedness in children after a thorough eye assessment begining with medical and ocular history taking, gross examination of anterior and posterior eye, binocular vision assessment, eye pressure measure, and cycloplegic refraction to name some of the things we do in our practice. However, there are now better, innovative and best recommended solutions (with check) that will slow down your child's myopic progression and as a result, will lower the risks of having complications like postsubcapsular cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment or myopic maculopathy.
