IKA-159 ANIBERSARYO NG KAPANGANAKAN NI MARIANO PONCE
1863 - 22 MARSO - 2022

Isinilang si Mariano Ponce noong ika-22 ng Marso 1863 sa Baliuag, Bulacan. Siya ang panganay na anak ng nakatatandang Mariano Ponce at Maria Collantes de los Santos. Bukod kay Mariano, nabiyayaan pa ang mag-asawang Ponce ng tatlo pang anak na sina Vicente, Francisco, at Jacinto.

Natapos ni Ponce ang kanyang elementarya sa Baliwag. Lumipat sa Quiapo, Maynila upang ipagpatuloy ang pag-aaral. Nagtapos si Ponce ng Bachiller en Artes sa Colegio de San Juan de Letran sa Maynila noong 1885. Nagpatuloy siya sa Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas upang mag-aral ng kursong medisina ngunit nagpasiya siyang ipagpatuloy ang kanyang pag-aaral sa Europa.

Noong Hunyo 1887, tumungo si Ponce sa Barcelona upang ipagpatuloy ang kanyang pag-aaral ng medisina. Subalit nang siya ay makarating sa Espanya, naging abala siya sa gawain pulitikal ng mga kanyang kababayan.

Itinatag ng mga Pilipino sa Espanya ang pahayagang La Solidaridad upang palakasin ang kilusan para sa reporma. Pinangasiwaan nina Ponce at ng kanyang mga kababayan ang La Solidaridad ng halos anim na taon. Pagsapit ng 1895, hindi na sapat ang salapi para ipagpatuloy ang pahayagan. Lumabas ang huling isyu ng pahayagan noong ika-15 ng Nobyembre 1895.

Nilisan ni Ponce and Europa at ipinagpatuloy ang pakikibaka sa Hongkong at Hapon. Nahirang si Ponce bilang sugo ng pamahalaang rebolusyonaryo sa Hapon. Dumating siya sa Yokohama noong ika-29 ng Hunyo 1898 at inatasan siyang hilingin ang suporta ng pamahalaang Hapon at bumili ng armas na magagamit sa himagsikan.

Sa bansang Hapon rin niya nakilala ang dalagang si Okiyo Udagawa na kalaunan ay naging asawa niya. Nagkaroon sila ng apat na anak na sina Pedro, Carmen, Consolacion at Mary.

Kahit natapos na ang Rebolusyon, patuloy na isinulong ni Ponce ang Pan-Asyanismo. Lumibot siya sa Tsina, Vietnam, at Cambodia bago bumalik sa Pilipinas noong 1907.

Kinikilala rin si Ponce bilang isa sa mga pinakaunang poklorista ng Pilipinas. Pinamagatan niya ang kanyang akda na El Folk-lore Bulaqueno na tungkol sa mga kuwentong bayan na karaniwang kaugalian at paniniwala sa lalawigan ng Bulacan.

Mula nang maging aktibo sa La Solidaridad hanggang sa mga huling taon ng kanyang buhay, naging hilig ni Mariano Ponce ang pagsusulat tungkol sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas. Nagsimula ito bilang tugon sa hamon ni Rizal na isulat ang talino at talento ng mga kilalang Pilipino upang buwagin ang umiiral na mga negatibong pananaw ng mga Kastila sa mga Pilipino.

Matapos ng lagpas sa dalawampung taon na paninirahan sa ibayong dagat mula Espanya, Hong Kong, at Hapon, muling nagbalik si Ponce sa Pilipinas kasama ang kanyang pamilya. Kanyang ipinagpatuloy ang mga gawain para sa kapakanan ng bayan noong Disyembre 1907.

Sumapi siya sa Partido Nacionalista at naluklok bilang kalihim nito. Itinatag niya ang opisyal na pahayagan nito na El Ideal. Naging patnugot din siya ng pahayagang El Renacimiento.
Nagsilbi rin si Ponce bilang Kinatawan ng Pangalawang Distrito ng Bulacan sa Asamblea Filipina mula 1909 hanggang 1912. Pinili siya ni Ispiker Sergio Osmeña na mamuno sa Komite ng mga Aklatan at binuo niya ang Bibliografia Parliamentaria.

Yumao si Ponce noong ika-23 ng Mayo 1918 sa Hong Kong habang patungo sana siya sa Tsina upang bisitahin ang kanyang matalik na kaibigan na si Dr. Sun Yat-sen na noon ay naging pangulo na Republika ng Tsina. Naulila niya ang kanyang asawang Hapon na si Okiyo Udagawa at apat nilang anak.

Iniuwi ang mga labi ni Ponce sa tulong ng kapwa niya mason. Idinaos ang lamay sa templo ng lohiya ng Sinukuan sa Kalye Bilbao, Tondo, Maynila. Inilibing siya sa Cemeterio del Norte (ngayon ay Manila North Cemetery) noong ika-15 ng Hunyo 1918. Noong ika-19 ng Mayo 1951, iniuwi ang kanyang mga labi sa Baliwag, Bulacan.
