Being able to look at fonts organized by style will lessen the difficulty of having to look at every single font in your collection. TYPE FACT: Aldus Manutius is credited for designing the first italic font, which was to be used for small editions of popular books at the time. He first used italics at his press in Venice in 1500, publishing books of poetry that were made to be small, informal, and easily carried in a hand.

TYPE FACT: The ampersand can be traced back to the 1st century AD and Old Roman cursive. The more modern symbol we see now, however, is a version of an "et" ligature in script developed during the Renaissance period. The word "ampersand" is a slurred version of the phrase, "and per se and", which was gradually shortened through the years to the word we know today.
