Maon, Butuan City - Maon Integrated School has opened its gates to 157 families or 596 individuals directly affected by floods amid rising water levels of Agusan River since February 3, 2024.
For two consecutive weeks, much of Mindanao, particularly CARAGA and Davao regions, were affected by multiple weather systems namely troughs of two low pressure areas and the easterlies that brought in a significant volume of rain. Maon Integrated School has started accommodating evacuees since February 3, 2024, Saturday. From just three families in the first night, the number of evacuees accommodated in the school ballooned to 596 individuals which is equivalent tp 157 families coming from Purok Balantiyong, Purok Kamunggay, and Purok Kamote of Barangay Maon.
Camaraderie and solidarity reverberated among the school's staff headed by the SDRRM coordinators, key local government officials of Barangay Maon, and other government agencies particularly the City Social Welfare and Development, the Philippine Red Cross, and the Philippine National Police. Concurrently, a seasoned educator of Maon IS celebrated a very meaningful birthday through a hot and delicious meal shared with the school's evacuees.
