O happy fault, o necessary sin of Adam....
Sin, shame, and sufferring should bring about humility; otherwise we miss the oportunity
I see many parents who genuinely want to repair their relationship with their adult child but don't know how.
The first part of repair is taking responsibility. Instead of "I did my best" (which might be true but also feels dismissive), the more specific reason might sound something like:
"I didn't understand what you needed and I deeply regret that I didn't do more to figure that out."
or
"I didn't have the skills to separate out my needs from yours, and I deeply regret not getting the help I needed to be a better parent."
Or
“I didn’t have the awareness that my own wounds were getting in the way of being there for you in the way you deserved, and I wish more than anything that I’d known and worked through them instead of acting them out on you.”
You have no idea who much an adult child longs to hear a genuine sentiment like this in which responsibility is taken.
The second part of repair is asking how you can *change things starting now.* And if the adult child tells you kindly how you can be a better parent going forward, don't defend yourself or argue.
Just listen very, very carefully. As my clinical supervisor said, “You have two ears and one mouth for a reason.”
