The situation only gets worse for you when you are not able to control your emotions.

We Didn’t Do Anything Wrong, But Somehow, We Lost

During the press conference to announce that NOKIA is being acquired by Microsoft, President and CEO of Nokia, Stephen Elop ended his speech saying this:

“We didn’t do anything wrong, but somehow, we lost”.

Upon saying that, all his management team, himself included, shed sad tears.

Nokia had been a respectable company. They didn’t do anything wrong in their business, however, the world changed too fast. Their opponents were too powerful.

They missed out on learning, they missed out on changing, and thus they lost the opportunity at hand to make it big.

Not only did they miss the opportunity to earn big money, they lost their chance of survival.

The message of this story is, if you don’t change, you shall be removed from the competition.

It’s not wrong if you don’t want to learn new things. However, if your thoughts and mindset cannot catch up with time, you will be eliminated.

Complacency and "I know it all" attitude (even as industry leader) is a big enemy in business and life.

Inflation is like a termite. It eats into your finances silently. Most of the times, you think you’re okay, but underneath the long grocery tapes and stacks of bills, your future is already being attacked. Imagine this using the rule of 72.

If your savings amounts to 1M, and inflation is at 4%, in 18 years, your 1M will be worth 500k. And that’s assuming you didn’t withdraw anything of course, and that interest rates are almost at zero.

If inflation goes up to 8%, that means your 1M will have the purchasing power of 500k in 9 years.

Investments will also have a higher hurdle rate. If your bonds are giving you 5% and inflation is at 5%, no more excess returns there.

People must not underestimate the difficulties in our current economic environment. Ngayon pa lang, recalibrate already. Find ways to fine tune our finances because this recession is a long one.

1. Iwas budol muna friends. Buy things on sale, but only things you really need. A 70% discount for something you can live without is a 100% expense. Better yet, maximize digitalization and shopping apps by selling instead of buying useless things.

2. Save more, now more than ever. Winter is coming. The only one who will survive are those who have extra provisions. Getting buried in unsustainable and unproductive debt is understandable for the poor, not for those who are well-off. Blingaroxia is a silent pandemic in our middle class and even among the very rich. Pride doesn’t pay bills.

3. Find extra work or sidehustles NOW. A couple said they challenged themselves to make an extra 200 pesos per day. TWO HUNDRED. Some of you don’t even miss that amount. Pang delivery cost lang yan. But this couple realized that 200 X 30 is 6000. And 6000 X 12 is 72,000 per year! If you invest that at 8% return every year, that’s 77,760 on the first year. Compounding return is your best friend, but being able to EARN and WIDEN your base is your financial savior.

4. You are your best product. Sharpen your skills, market your personal brand, learn every single day. Growing professionally also benefits from the power of compounding. The more you work and network and learn, the faster your value grows. This ensures you won’t have a hard time getting a job using your BRAINS as capital.
