The First Week of Advent Represents: Hope

Candle Color: Purple

Purple is the primary color associated with Advent. Within the Catholic Church it symbolizes penance, preparation, and sacrifice. During the first week of Advent we remember the Old Testament prophets who foretold of Jesus’ coming with hope and anticipation.

Scripture Reflection:
"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined." Isaiah 9:2

Dear Jesus, you are the hope in our messy world.
This Advent, help us slow down, listen to your voice, and focus on what’s really important.
We place our hope in you as we prepare our hearts to celebrate your birth on Christmas. Amen.

The Great Mystery of Our Faith:
CHRIST, THE KING and the EUCHARIST is ONE and the SAME. 🙏❣️

While the Bible is the inspired Word of God, not everything in it is perfectly clear. Even Saint Peter says this about Saint Paul’s epistles in 2 Peter 3:16.

This is why we should stay close to the teachings of the Church. It’s through the teachings of the magisterium that we’re able to better understand what scripture teaches, and not be left to endlessly debate its meaning with no resolution.

Season 3, Episode 2 "Mary"

The beauty of our faith is that we are able to embrace such deep mysteries as God becoming man and choosing Mary to be His mother.
..and much more beautiful that on the cross, Jesus also shared His mother to us.

How beautiful indeed that we, Catholics (and all those who recognize so), also have a mother in Mary!

So how can one who believes that Jesus is God has so much hatred for His mother?

OUR FATHER

Anchor Verse: “Father, holy be your name. ~ Luke 11:2”

Reflection:

Our Father is a truly powerful prayer. First, because it is the prayer pattern Jesus himself taught us. Second, it reflects our relationship with God as His family and a reminder of where we have gone astray as His children. Third, as Bishop Barron says, “Our church fathers said that all prayers are a version of the Our Father.”

1) “Our Father” —That we are heirs of not somebody influential, like a mayor, or senator, or a wealthy businessman, but Someone more powerful than any well-off or VIP, Someone who is outside of space and time—-God, Our Father. It also reminds us that fatherhood is a divine gift. We now live in a society where fatherhood is minimized or deemed unnecessary.
2) “who art in heaven”—That there is heaven, which speaks of the promise of eternal life.
3) “holy be your name”—The nature of God, that which is holy. Unfortunately, take a look at the current social media posts. How often do you see the word “holy?” It is not often used anymore as anything worthy of attention.
4) “your kingdom come”—Speaks of hope.
5) “your will be done.” —Speaks of self-denial.
6) “on earth as it is in heaven— Acknowledges the omnipresence of God- that God is everywhere.
7) “Give us” —Speaks of human limitation. That without God, we won’t make it.
8) “this day” —Speaks of the fleeting value of time.
9) “our daily bread”—Speaks not just about human food but our spiritual food, the sacrificial meal, the Holy Eucharist itself.
10) “and forgive us”— That we acknowledge that we are sinners and make mistakes
11) “as we forgive those who trespass against us”- Reminds us of the divine mandate of justice—that God cannot forgive us unless we forgive others.
12) “and lead us” —Speaks of our need to be guided, or we would be lost.
13) “not into temptation”—That we are aware that we are weak.
14) “but deliver us”—That we need saving by God Himself, our Savior.
15) “from evil”—That today, tomorrow, and every day, we believe that evil is not final, but God.
