An outbreak has been declared in Quezon City.

: also known as whooping cough,
is a highly contagious bacterial disease. It is highly contagious in the early catarrhal stage, before paroxysmal cough. Incubation period is usually 7 days but it ranges from 5 to 15 days.

CAUSE
Bordetella pertussis bacteria

MODE OF TRANSMISSION
Acquired primarily through direct contact with discharges from respiratory mucus membranes of infected persons (The bacteria may be spread through droplets and indirect contact with articles freshly soiled with the discharges of infected persons.)

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
• Cough persisting 2 or more weeks
• Fits of coughing
• Cough followed by vomiting

TREATMENT
Antibiotics may shorten the period of communicability from 7 days after exposure to 3 weeks after onset of typical paroxysms to only 5-7 days after onset therapy.

PREVENTION
Three primary immunization doses of DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine) confer immunity to pertussis. Booster doses are recommended to be given after 1 year old, 4-6 years old, and at 11 years old.

The 5-in-1 vaccine, also known as the DTaP/IPV/Hib vaccine, is one of the first vaccines that your baby will have. It's a single injection which protects them against five serious childhood diseases.
These five illnesses are diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), polio, and Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b).

Pregnant women should receive Tdap anytime during pregnancy if it is indicated for wound care or during a community pertussis outbreak. If Tdap is administered earlier in pregnancy, it should not be repeated between 27 and 36 weeks gestation; only one dose is recommended during each pregnancy.

A 17-year-old patient was transferred from urgent care to our hospital due to a collapsed lung or on medical terms we call it pneumothorax. This kid has no medical history, a healthy boy who suddenly developed shortness of breath. When asked about his lifestyle he mentioned he is va**ng and has been using it for the last 5 years. Images on his scan showed blisters or we call them blebs on his lungs. Now, to help this kid breathe and live we have to place a chest tube in between the ribs into the space around the lungs to help drain the air and allow the lungs to re-expand. This kid was also scheduled for an emergency operation to remove the blebs the procedure is called VATS Closure ( Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Suture Closure) and bleb resection. And has to stay in the ICU. E-cigarettes have been linked to thousands of cases of serious lung injury, some resulting in death. E-cigarette users were even more prone to cause cardiovascular plaque leading to heart attacks and severe cardiovascular problems.
E-cigarettes also have ni****ne, and v***r includes potentially harmful substances such as diacetyl a cancer-causing chemical.

So, is smoking better than va**ng, or va**ng is better than smoking?

I think the answer lies when you are lying in the hospital bed 🤷🏼‍♀️

If you're into health and beauty treatment, you probably heard of ear candling. It is the practice of placing a cone-shaped wax into the ear. The candle is then lit and burned for a few minutes. It is said to relieve ear pain and remove ear wax. However, studies shows that ear candling has no therapeutic value and no approved medical use. Melted wax could burn your skin or it can even clog your ear passage which causes hearing loss. Ear candling is also not advisable to patients with perforated ear drum or concurrent ear infection.

It is better to consult your ENT practitioners for any ear concerns. It is always and has been best to avail of professional treatment. Go to your ENT doctor near you.
