UCC COE Conducts Webinar on Plagiarism

The Research and Education Committee of the College of Education hosted a webinar on plagiarism entitled, "Don't be rigged: Be orig!" yesterday, November 20, 2023.

The event drew in a total of 115 fourth-year education majors from both the North and South campuses. With the esteemed guest speaker Prof. Bethany Marie C. Lumabi, the discussion centered on the critical importance of preventing plagiarism in research writing and maintaining academic integrity.

In the webinar, Prof. Lumabi enlightened the audience about the crucial role of plagiarism in academia and its direct impact on academic integrity. The session began by defining plagiarism and exploring the commonly committed types of plagiarism. The participants were also equipped with free applications and artificial intelligences available for plagiarism checks, along with practical strategies to prevent plagiarism in research writing. Furthermore, Ma’am Lumabi emphasized a valuable lesson—urging the audience to utilize the internet and artificial intelligence as tools rather than accomplices in the crime of plagiarism.

While writing can be challenging, it is also a skill that can be developed and improved. Using the words of Prof. Lumabi, “Being a writer carries great responsibility, and plagiarism comes with consequences”. Education majors must practice honesty to build their credibility as professionals and student-researchers.

“I hope you were able to bag fruitful learnings from this webinar. May this equip you with the necessary skills in making your action research this academic year.” - Prof. Cambe, the research coordinator said in her closing remarks.

"Teachers play a vital role in guiding and supporting us on our journey towards success, lighting the way with knowledge and encouragement."

Behind every successful student stands a dedicated teacher who has selflessly invested time, energy, and heart into nurturing young minds. As we celebrate Teachers' Month, it's crucial to acknowledge the immense contributions of these unsung heroes.

Teachers don't just impart knowledge; they inspire, motivate, and kindle a lifelong love for learning. Their classrooms aren't just places of instruction but sanctuaries where dreams take root and aspirations find wings.

In the pursuit of knowledge, teachers often sacrifice their personal time, pouring over lesson plans and grading papers late into the night. Yet, their dedication never wavers. They're the mentors who believe in their students' potential even when the world doubts it.

This Teachers' Month, let's express our profound gratitude to these remarkable individuals who shape the future with their wisdom, passion, and boundless dedication. Every student's success story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of teachers who guide us on the path to knowledge and enlightenment.

So, to all the dedicated teachers out there, thank you for your unwavering commitment to shaping the leaders, thinkers, and dreamers of tomorrow. Your influence is immeasurable, and your sacrifices do not go unnoticed.

"You are not just a LEADER. You are a SERVANT."

The first and most crucial decision a leader must make is to serve, without which one's ability to lead is severely constrained. Being a servant leader entails giving people authority. However, a team or organization may achieve unprecedented success by putting such an individual in charge, whether from the front or back.

Yesterday, October 28, 2022, the College of Education Council participated in the Council of Presidents (COP) Leadership Summit 2022 with the theme of "REVAMPING TO A PREMIUM VERSION OF LEADERSHIP" hosted by the UCC - Supreme Student Council at the University of Caloocan City - Camarin Campus, alongside the entire College of Education Department Councils and other UCC academic and non-academic organizations.

The College of Education Council believes and emphasizes that being a leader does not involve being in a dominant position and dictating your terms based on your desires and whims. As a leader, you are 'serving.'
