Advocating for animal welfare doesn't end in providing shelter for homeless mutts or merely feeding and keeping stray felines. It's actually just the start of your responsibility of raising them.

A few weeks back, this little fella was left outside our clinic attached with a tiny piece of paper saying "Sorry po kung iniwan ko lang po sya sa labas po ninyo sana po matulungan nyo sya lumakas ulit". As heartbreaking as it sounds, this is a form of animal abandonment that we cannot simply turn a blind eye to.

Section 7 of the R.A. 8485 as amended by 10631 states that "it shall be unlawful for any person who has custody of an animal to abandon the animal.. The person liable shall suffer maximum penalty." Neglecting your pets and leaving them somewhere so that you are spared from accountability when they become sick is a CRIME, ladies and gentlemen.

Additionally, just as much as we desire to accommodate all pets in need, the truth is we are LIMITED. We have limited space for abandoned pets, we have limited stocks and resources and most importantly we have limited manpower. And if we allow this kind of thing to happen, it is likewise tolerating IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP.

Now going back to the poor kitty, we still gave him IV fluids and initial medications, unfortunately, he lost the battle 12 hours after being confined due to severe dehydration and emaciation. He passed away silently in the clinic.

We really hope that this case serves as a lesson to everyone that we should not leave our pets when they are ill, old, too many or when they have bad behavior. Let us always bear in mind that owning a pet is a lifetime commitment.
