Did you know that cyclones can be classified according to their geography? Well, yes, it is. But, have you ever wondered why people from other countries call specific cyclones such as typhoons, hurricanes, or tropical cyclones? Well, the answer to that is very simple.

But first, let's start the topic by defining what a cyclone is. A cyclone is an organized rotating set of clouds and thunderstorms that is formed due to the Coriolis effect, wind channels, and distribution of heat.

According to a recent study, cyclones can be classified into three categories depending on which ocean they are formed. For instance, hurricanes form in the North Atlantic Ocean, Cenntral North Pacific Ocean. and Eastern North Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, typhoons are formed in Northwest Pacific Ocean wherein most asian countries are affected. Lastly, tropical cyclones are formed in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2024).

And that's all for now. Sci-folks, thanks for reading. Don't forget to click the react button and share the content. Hope you have learned something. Have a great day and peace out!

𝓞𝔃𝓸𝓷𝓮, 𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓩𝓸𝓷𝓮

Located fifteen to thirty kilometers above the Earth's surface, the Ozone Layer is a protective shield that safeguards us from harmful ultraviolet radiation (European Environment Agency, 2023). For millennia, it has saved people from attaining sun radiation-induced diseases such as skin cancers. It is not just us, but it also saves all other forms of life on the planet like plants and animals (UN Environment Programme, n.d.) The Ozone Layer has been saving us in a seemingly immeasurable amount of time already but, are we doing our part to save it as well?

The Ozone Layer is located in one of the layers of the atmosphere, the Stratosphere. Contrary to popular beliefs that the ozone layer is a thick, continuous layer of gas surrounding the Earth, it has a very unique composition in battling off sunlight. Ozone is formed when sunlight breaks apart oxygen molecules (O2) and free oxygen atoms bond together with other O2 molecules. When ultraviolet light hits an ozone molecule, it breaks apart into an oxygen molecule (O2) and a separate oxygen atom (O). Don't worry, because it eventually becomes an ozone molecule (O3) again and this cycle continues on and on.

Unfortunately, the ozone's archnemesis is the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) — compounds composed of carbon, fluorine, and chlorine. Gaseous CFCs could rise to the stratosphere which gets broken down by sunlight, resulting in the release of chlorine atoms and reacts with the ozone molecules. With more CFCs being released into the stratosphere, ozone molecules are getting destroyed in return (EPA, 2021).

The bigger question is, where do these CFCs come from? Well, CFCs are produced from air-conditioning, refrigeration, blowing agents in foams, insulations and packing materials, propellants in aerosol cans, and as solvents (Rosato, 2004). Although there have been phenomenal and green-inclined changes to today's technology, the high-scale impact of CFCs in the past century has led to an even bigger challenge to today's advocates and environmentalists. With strict environmental protocols and laws imposed today, are these enough to reduce the increasing heat index we experience in the Philippines?

With heat indexes scorching at 38°C to 45°C, we could partially blame the depletion of the ozone layer for the El Niño we are experiencing. However, it is important to take into account the greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere and the continuous degradation of our forestry throughout the country. While the lawmakers' and public officials' attention is shifted towards all other issues in the country, we could still do our part with our collective voice to spark a change in our respective communities. A change that could revolutionize our perception of the planet's degrading situation.

The Ozone Layer may be several kilometers above our heads, but it is still a part of our beloved planet. The ozone is always and will always be our zone.

Grassfires can be sparked by various factors, including f***l wastes. When f***l matter accumulates in grassy areas, it can dry out and become highly flammable. Microorganisms in the f***s break down organic matter, releasing methane and other gases that can ignite acting as fuel. The heat generated from decomposition can raise temperatures enough to ignite dry grass. This combination of factors can lead to grass fires.

The waste humans create while enjoying outdoor spaces can have severe impacts if not disposed of properly. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐍𝐨 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 encourages outdoor enthusiasts to consider the impacts they leave behind, which will undoubtedly affect other people, water, and wildlife.

𝗗𝗘𝗕𝗨𝗡𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗔𝗥 𝗘𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗣𝗦𝗘

Solar eclipses have fascinated and captivated humanity for millennia, inspiring a myriad of myths and misconceptions. Despite the scientific understanding we have gained about these celestial events, myths surrounding solar eclipses persist, perpetuated by folklore and misinformation. NASA has undertaken the task of debunking misconceptions surrounding a solar eclipse last Monday, April 8, 2024 (Chapell, B. 2024). In this article, we will unveil the facts about several common myths associated with solar eclipses using evidence-based research.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟭: 𝗜𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁, 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗜𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆.

One prevalent myth surrounding solar eclipses is that pregnant women should avoid viewing them due to potential harm to the unborn child. However, scientific research indicates otherwise. A study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology by W. J. Rogerson et al. (2003) investigated the effects of maternal exposure to solar eclipses on pregnancy outcomes. The researchers found no significant correlation between solar eclipses and adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth, low birth weight, or congenital anomalies. Additionally, Dr. Linda Vorvick, a family medicine physician and medical reviewer for MedlinePlus, confirms that viewing a solar eclipse during pregnancy does not pose any known risks to the mother or the fetus (Vorvick, 2021).

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟮: 𝗘𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Another common myth associated with solar eclipses is the belief that any food prepared during the event will become poisoned or unsafe to consume. However, there is no scientific basis for this claim. In an article published in Scientific American, Dr. John Millis, an astronomer and science educator, explains that solar eclipses do not affect food safety or quality (Millis, 2017). Food prepared or consumed during a solar eclipse is subject to the same food safety standards as at any other time. The notion of eclipses contaminating food is purely a superstition without any empirical evidence to support it.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟯: 𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

This misconception has led many people to avoid looking directly at eclipses for fear of permanent eye damage. However, experts in ophthalmology and astronomy agree that it is safe to observe a total solar eclipse with the naked eye during a brief period of totality. (Fienberg, 2017; NASA, 2017). It is only during the partial phases of an eclipse that proper eye protection, such as solar viewing glasses or solar filters, is necessary to prevent eye damage.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟰: 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻.

Modern science dismisses such notions as unfounded. In an article published in Psychology Today, Dr. Stuart Vyse, a psychologist and author specializing in superstition and irrational behavior, explains that the perceived significance of eclipses is often the result of cognitive biases and confirmation bias (Vyse, 2017). While solar eclipses are awe-inspiring natural phenomena, there is no empirical evidence to suggest that they have any predictive power over human affairs or personal destinies.

Astronomers explain that solar eclipses are predictable and occur regularly as a result of the moon's orbit intersecting with the Earth's orbit around the sun. Dr. Jay Pasachoff, an astronomer and professor at Williams College, clarifies that solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow on the Earth's surface (Pasachoff, 2017). While solar eclipses are undoubtedly remarkable events, their occurrence is not indicative of any extraordinary cosmic phenomena beyond the established principles of orbital mechanics.

By recognizing the difference between scientific facts and myths surrounding celestial events, we can cultivate a deeper appreciation and understanding of the natural world and the universe beyond. This understanding has the potential to inspire us to explore and discover the mysteries of the cosmos, and to continue to learn and grow as individuals and as a society.
