HAPPENING NOW || The 2nd day of the Training on Digital Mapping Operations Using Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) and ArcGIS begins with an overview of yesterday's morning and afternoon sessions by the Resource Person, Mr. Al Wahab Harun, GIS Specialist and a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering at Notre Dame University.
He emphasize the definition of Geographical Information System (GIS) and Basic concept in QGIS.
This training was initiated by Special Development Fund (SDF) under the Office of the Special Concerns (OSCO) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR). The participants are from various sectors of MAFAR including Agriculture, Fisheries, Engineering, Planning, SDF, TDIF, and representatives from MAFAR Provincial Offices such as MAFAR Maguindanao, MAFAR Tawi-Tawi, and MAFAR Basilan are also present. The duration of the activity is five days, starting from September 19, 2022 to September 23, 2022 at Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City.
The objective of this activity is to equip the participants with basic knowledge of Geographic Information System, to capacitate the participants in analyzing, manipulating, and displaying Geographic Information, to help the participants understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context through the use of QGIS and ArcGIS, and its application in the implementation of Programs, Projects, and Activities (PPAs) of MAFAR-SDF.
It was highlighted yesterday by Ms. Arphia T. Ebus, the Chief of Staff and Head of the Office of Special Concerns about the objective of this activity in her opening remarks. She quoted, "Without team work, we can't successfully implement the Programs, Project, and Activities of MAFAR."
She added, "Farmers are not just our beneficiaries but they are our partners. We have to help them develop their economic activities."
This statement was strongly agreed by Mr. Harun through his statements of the importance of GIS and its objectives. He stated three essential informations that the participants must know pertaining to QGIS and ArcGIS: first is that its implementation (QGIS) shall produce sustainability, second is that it shall be resilient and must consider the inclusion of project evaluation or assessment for possible climate change and/or natural calamity, and lastly is this data base is intact.
The training's methodology to come up with final outputs is through lecture activities, presentations, group discussions, and practical applications.
