It demonstrates Bangsamoro's firm commitment to preserving our region's rich historical, religious, and educational heritage while creating an inclusive environment where every learner, regardless of background, can succeed,” Minister of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education of Bangsamoro Mohagher Iqbal said.

IMPORTANT DATES THIS MONTH OF MUHARRAM

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐢𝐣𝐫𝐢𝐲𝐚𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫 𝟏𝟒𝟒𝟔, 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐡 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬

The month of Muharram comes in with some Imaan (faith) boosting Sunnah (voluntary) fastings opportunities. While it is sunnah to fast the 9th and 10th days or 10th and 11th days of the said month, those who are able to can continue fasting the next days of Thursday Sunnah fasting, followed by the Ayyāmul Bīd (White days) and the Monday Sunnah Fasting.

’Ashurā is derived from the word ’Asharah, which means ten in Arabic. ’Ashurah is the 10th day of Muharram and this year it falls on a Tuesday 16th July 2024.

It was on ’Ashurā that Allāh split the Red Sea so that Mūsā (عليه السلام‎) and the Children of Israel could escape Pharaoh and his army.

Therefore, Mūsā (عليه السلام‎) would fast on ’Ashurā to commemorate this righteous day and show gratitude to Allāh - and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) followed in his footsteps.

Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said, ’The Prophet (ﷺ) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashurā. He said, “What is this?” They said, “This is a righteous day. It is the day when Allāh saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Mūsā (عليه السلام‎) fasted on this day”. He said, “We have more right to Mūsā (عليه السلام‎) than you”, so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day’. [Bukhari]

On the authority of Abu Qatadah (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ), was asked about fasting on the day of ’Ashurā, and he said, ‘It expiates [wipes out the minor sins of] the past year’. [Muslim]

It is recommended to fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. If that's not possible, then on the 10th and 11th of Muharram.

When the Prophet came to Madinah he noticed that the Jews would fast on ’Ashurā to commemorate the day Allāh saved Mūsā (عليه السلام‎) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. So, to distinguish the Ummah from the People of the Book, the Prophet (ﷺ) advised the believers to fast for another day alongside ’Ashurā - the 9th or the 11th of Muharram.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ’Fast the Day of ‘Ashurā and be different from the Jews by fasting a day before it or a day after it’. [Ahmad]

He (ﷺ) also said, ‘If I remain [alive] till the following year, I will most certainly fast the ninth [alongside the 10th al-Muharram]’.
