HRM Edidem Ekpenyong Udoekong Akpabio.

One of the legendary figures in Nigeria's socio-political and cultural history and in the evolution of Akwa Ibom State was an Offot Ukwa son, Edidem Ekpenyong Udoekong Akpabio.

A scion of the Royal Dynasty of Obong Udoekong Akpabio Udosen of Anua Obio Offot in Offot Ukwa Clan, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Edidem Ekpenyong Udoekong Akpabio lived 90 years. He succeeded his father, Obong Udoekong Akpabio as a village head and reigned for 45 years.

On this day 72 years ago (1952) Obong Ekpeyong Udoekong Akpabio was crowned as the 13th successor of the throne, as Obong Offot Ukwa after the demise of his father Udoekong Akpabio Udosen Atai Abiaeto Ubom Abegekiad Akpan Offot Ukwa.

The name illustrates the generation and genealogy of the people of Offot Ukwa who arrived the present Offot Clan in the 14th Century.

Obong Ekpeyong Udoekong Akpabio till date remains the last King of Offot Ukwa Clan in Uyo by lineage, as subsequent Kings from 1982, assent the throne by appointment.

Given to deep insight and forthrightness, he founded the Esop Nnuk Enin Ikpaisong Ibibio which eventually inspired the formation of Ibibio Union and brought renaissance among the people. A dogged fighter for the socio-economic and political rights of his people, Edidem Akpabio, was one of the agitators for the Cross River, Ogoja and Rivers (COR) State Movement.

With his political alliance, he was given a seat in the Western House of Chiefs by the then Premier, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He became the Paramount Ruler of Uyo Local Government Area in 1978. He held the chieftaincy title of Obong Ikpaisong Ibibio.

He was the Vice President of the Cross River State Council of Chiefs and was among the 10 Paramount Rulers in the Mainland part of the then Cross River State who signed the request for the creation of Akwa Ibom State, eventually created by the Federal Government, under the Military regime of President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, on September 23, 1987.

He was the one that gave the name of Akwa lbom State with the true meaning of it. Yet ,his name has been forgotten, that was in 1979. And why the name should be called Akwa lbom, the true meaning of Akwa Ibom. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Obong lkpaisong Ibibio.
