CHILDHOOD TO COLLEGE DAYS
I was born in a family that loves to eat... My mom is a pure Ilocana and it is because of her that I learned how to cook special dishes both tagalog and ilocano dishes and which later on became my passion.
On the other hand, my dad being a politician, loves to eat and loves to organize parties and gatherings ( maybe the reason he married my mom since there's a saying that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach 🤣🤣🤣) He's the type of person who wants everybody to be present during meals and enjoy the foods prepared by my mom. So, as I grew older you can just imagine my younger sis and my mom and I are always busy cooking everytime my dad invites people to come over.
MARRIED LIFE
At the age of 23, I got married and had just graduated college that time and we lived with my Dad (my mom died a year before I got married) my husband and I have to work hard to support our KIDS. After I gave birth to my 1st child, I worked as an assistant receptionist at the President's Office in University of Cebu, Cebu City. It wasn't easy since it was hard to prioritize work if you still have a month old baby so I decided to quit the job and stayed home.
I got pregnant again to my 2nd son and this time I needed to do something to help my husband support our kids. I've tried a lot of small businesses for additional income such as selling different stuff from RTW's to jewelries, small lending money business and etc. Since cooking is my passion my husband, a partner (close cousin of mine) and I finally got a contract as canteen concessioners in one of the factories in Cebu way back 1990's. l learned to do budgeting, marketing, managing people and mingling with customers with different characters. Life has been easier then....
Year 1995 our canteen contract ended, so my husband decided to go travel for greener pasture. In year 1996 he left for the States and I was left with 2 sons and a daughter still in my womb, yes, I was pregnant with my daughter at that time when he left. A father and a mother at the same time didn't stop me from doing business by myself. I rented a whole house in Cebu with my kids and turned it into a boarding house, a cafeteria and internet Cafe in one.
CANADA DAYS
In year 2002, I set aside the business since I decided to work abroad since my kids were getting older and needed more financing for their school. I had to leave my kids to my Dad in Dapitan City, which is his hometown. I am an OFW for 10 years, and had been to a lot of jobs in Canada. From caregiver to office/house cleaner to factory worker to cashier/baker in one of the famous coffee shop there which was Tim Horton's. It wasn't easy away from home and away from my kids.
BACK TO PHILIPPINES
Year 2011 my dad died of cancer and my 2 sons at that time were now college graduates and was sponsored by my husband in the States. They have good jobs now with their dad, thank God. I went home year 2012 per my kids advise to take a rest for being an OFW as well as to take care of my Special Sister since my brother and another sister are now in Canada and USA with their own families. It was a hard decision for me since until now we weren't able to be together as one family. But I know God has a reason for all of this and I lift up everything to HIM!
2018 my daughter came home to join me here and finish her Nursing course here in the Philippines. So I am now busy taking care of her and so with my sister. I praise God for that. Life must go on....
BACK TO FOOD BUSINESS
For the past years that I'm back here in the Philippines, In 2016, I had an ice cream business with my cousin, but it only lasted for 2 years since it was only seasonal and it was so hard to find somebody who's gonna stay with you to work if the job was only an occasional work. In 2018, I tried online selling, since I love to cook and bake I watch cooking videos on youtube most of the time and learned to make different desserts and tried selling them online only in Dapitan area.
Luckily it went well but I only took orders mostly for birthdays and other occasions.
I didn't stop educating myself and learning new recipes. I went all the way to Cebu and attended classes at Caro and Marie (I actually had another schedule of class February but Covid-19 was already in the news all over media, so my kids didn't allow me to travel) I came across this online cooking Kusina University and read good feedbacks from their students. It felt so great and full of fulfillment every time I finish a class. It's a growing learning experience and cooking or baking and selling is tiring, but I love what I`m doing, so I don't mind being tired at all... Just a cup of coffee then I'm good to go again..... 😊
