Before a Flood

1. Move the Car to Higher Ground: If a flood is imminent, relocate your car to a higher area if possible.

2. Seal Openings: Close all windows, doors, and sunroofs to prevent water from entering.

3. Disconnect the Battery: This can help prevent electrical damage if the car is submerged.

4. Avoid Driving Through Water: If you encounter flooding while driving, don’t drive through deep water, as it can cause significant damage to the engine and electronics.

After a Flood

1. Do Not Start the Car: Attempting to start the car while it's wet can cause severe electrical and mechanical damage. Let it dry first.

2. Disconnect the Battery: If you haven't done this already, disconnect the battery to avoid electrical issues.

3. Assess the Damage: Check how much water entered the car. Was it just in the floorboards, or did it reach the dashboard?

4. Dry the Interior: Open the doors and windows, remove any water-soaked items, and use towels to dry the inside. A dehumidifier or fans can help speed up the process.

5. Check for Contamination: If the floodwater was dirty or contained sewage, professional cleaning may be necessary to avoid health risks.

6. Inspect Electrical Components: Have a professional check the car's electrical systems and components before attempting to start it.

7. Change Fluids: Replace engine oil, transmission fluid, and other fluids that may have been contaminated with water.

8. File an Insurance Claim: Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the damage and see if you’re covered.
