SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that the company's Starlink satellite internet service will soon provide free emergency services access on mobile phones for people in distress worldwide, subject to government approval in each country.
“After thinking it through, SpaceX Starlink will provide emergency services access for mobile phones for people in distress for free…Can't have a situation where someone dies because they forgot or were unable to pay for it,” Musk wrote on social media platform X.
Musk also mentioned that this capability would be useful for people stranded in remote areas. SpaceX has launched over 6,900 Starlink satellites, with about 6,300 currently in orbit, including nearly 130 equipped with direct-to-cell capabilities.
These satellites function as cell towers in space, allowing users to access texting, calling, and internet browsing globally with standard LTE phones, without needing extra hardware or apps.
