Hypertension is the most commonly diagnosed illness among older Filipinos. 7 in 10 older persons have high blood pressure, and 38% of them are unaware of their condition. In addition to low awareness, the treatment rate is also low, with 52% of older Filipinos having untreated hypertension.
As the month ends, let's continue highlighting the importance of monitoring blood pressure and treating hypertension.

The new face of aging is one of active health and well-being. According to the LSAHP 2018 report, more than half of older Filipinos are engaging in physical activities such as walking, jogging, and Zumba every day. Other activities such as gardening, socializing with friends and neighbors, and watching the television are also among the most regular daily activities of older Filipinos. These activities are essential for an active and healthy aging for older Filipinos.
The continuous aging of the Philippine population indicates more people having the privilege to reach older ages. The advocacy for older people does not stop at prolonging life expectancies; rather, policymakers, academics, and the private sector have a part to play in the holistic fulfillment of older persons’ rights to healthy and active aging.
In conclusion of our celebration of the International Day of Older Persons and the Filipino Elderly Week 2023, the Demographic Research and Development Foundation (DRDF) and the University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) express their support of the UN Agenda for 2021-2030 as the Decade for Healthy and Active Aging.

Generally, older Filipinos are not lonely and are satisfied with their life. Loneliness, as measured by the LSAHP through the UCLA three-item scale, is found to be an uncommon phenomenon among older Filipinos. Most of them also report a positive assessment of their life and their level of contact with relatives and friends.
These measures are factors heavily associated with mental health, an essential human right that, along with economic security and sound physical health, deserves attention from policymakers to improve the well-being of older persons.

Through the years, legislation continues to provide government benefits for Filipino older persons. While most Filipino older persons are aware of these benefits, only a certain proportion of them are able to use each of these privileges. Discount privileges, for instance, have proven to be beneficial only to more financially capable older persons who have purchasing power for medicines, food, and the like.
While there is significant progress in the improvement of benefits for senior citizens, there are still socioeconomic gaps that need attention from the government.

Join us for the data release of the 2018 Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP) on 7 July 2022, Thursday, 2:00 PM, Jakarta time (3:00 PM, Manila time) via Zoom.
The LSAHP is the first multi-actor longitudinal study on ageing in the Philippines with information from older Filipinos, their caregivers, and adult children conducted by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia and Demographic Research and Development Foundation, Inc.
The 2018 baseline data provides comprehensive information on the health, economic status, and overall well-being of a nationally representative sample of older Filipinos aged 60 and older. These data have been a valuable resource for crafting evidence-based policies and programmes for this population sector.
