A hole in the wall.
It all started in 2007, we felt like eating some tacos. We drove around all of Dipolog City looking for some, but no luck. Until finally much to my delight we found a spot. Rhekos Pizza and Mexican Food. I ordered everything Mexican on the menu, 1 Burrito, 1 quesadilla, and 2 tacos. I remember waiting about 45 minutes for my order and I was the only customer there. The food was edible. It had seasoned ground meat, freshly chopped cabbage and they used ketchup and mayo as a dressing. It was a nice attempt but it was not what I was used to eating.
For the next 8 years we learned everything we could about cooking authentic Mexican Food from my mama, my hermanas, compadres, comadres, and whatever I could remember from my nana’s cooking. My nana or lola ran a kitchen “LA Fonda 77” inside the Mercado Central in Navojoa, Sonora, Mexico for over 50 years making traditional home cooked meals. I used to love it when she would come and stay with us. It was like having a restaurant in our home. My grandma was pretty awesome in the kitchen. Although, the tortillas you eat at Mas is mom’s recipe.
We opened at the arcade on Rizal and Magsaysay, Chef Froi’s old bakeshop, December 2015. We were not ready. We did not expect to be busy. We all thought. By we, I mean my wife, myself and our primo. We thought it would be a place for us to relax and have some beers. Eh, maybe a few customers would stroll in. The primo said he would invite his friends. That was the business plan. It turns out the primo has a sh*tload of friends and family. We were overwhelmed. No staff, just us. The primo, my wife and I. If it wasn’t for our good old friend Junex who stepped up and assisted us when no one else could, I don’t know what we would have done. Well we survived, kind of. We had to move to La Siesta Inn where we were “on again, off again” for the next two years. Now here we are again at Nigan’s Resto Bar. Mas Comida Mexicana at “Ventana de Froi”. “Now you see us, now you don’t”. Still bringing you authentic Mexican Food, now with a touch of Chef Froi’s magic. Still making everything from scratch using only the finest produce available from Bagsakan, because it has to be fresh. We make make our own tortillas, chips and salsas. Our Spanish Chorizo is locally sourced from a primo in Sicayab and sometimes Blondies. We look forward to serving you soon.
