DO YOU WANT TO FAST THIS LENT?
(In the words of Pope Francis)

What are you giving up for Lent?โ€ Itโ€™s a question a lot of people will get these next few days. If you want to change your body, perhaps alcohol, sweets and ci******es is the way to go. But if you want to change your heart, a harder fast is needed. This narrow road is gritty, but it isnโ€™t sterile. It will make room in ourselves to experience a love that can make us whole and set us free. So, if weโ€™re going to fast from anything this Lent, Pope Francis suggests that even more than sweets or alcohol, we fast from indifference towards others.

1. Fast from hurting words and say kind words.
2. Fast from sadness & be filled with gratitude.
3. Fast from anger & be filled with patience.
4. Fast from pessimism & be filled with hope.
5. Fast from worries & have trust with God.
6. Fast from complaints; contemplate simplicity.
7. Fast from pressures & be prayerful
8. Fast from bitterness; fill your heart with joy.
9. Fast from selfishness and be compassionate.
10. Fast from grudges and be reconciled.
11. Fast from words; be silent and listen.

ASH WEDNESDAY IS A DAY OF:
โœ“FASTING (18-59 YEARS OLD)
โœ“ABSTINENCE (14 AND ABOVE)

A friendly reminder from your HugotSeminarista family:

Today is ASH WEDNESDAY. As Catholics, we are encouraged to do the following practices: FASTING and ABSTINENCE.

(1) FASTING
- It is a form of penance that involves limiting kinds or amount of food or drink consumption.
- Catholics who are 18-59 years old are eligible to this practice.
- Days of fasting (with abstinence) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
- During fasting, the faithful should only eat 1 regular meal and 2 small meals (should not exceed the main amount of the main meal)
- Fast is broken by eating between meals and by drinks which could be considered food (milk shakes, but not milk).

(2) ABSTINENCE
- It is another form of penance that involves refraining from kinds of food or drink.
- This should be practiced by Catholics who are 14 years old and above (until death).
- During abstinence, the faithful should refrain from eating meat (i.e. flesh and organs of mammals and birds), but may consume fish and shellfish.
- Days of abstinence are Fridays in Lent.

N.B. Some people can be excused from fasting and abstinence. They are:

- persons with disabilities which make it difficult to understand or observe the practice (e.g. people with mental health concerns)
- the sick, frail, pregnant, or nursing women, according to need for meat or nourishment
- manual laborers, according to need
- guests at a meal who cannot excuse themselves without giving great offence or causing enmity
- those in other situations of moral or physical impossibility to observe the penitential discipline

MARCH 02โ€”ASH WEDNESDAY

'Remember, you are dust, and to dust you shall return.'โ€”Ecclesiastes 3:20

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is always 46 days before Easter Sunday. Lent is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, fasting, reflection, and ultimately celebration. This period represents Christโ€™s time of temptation in the wilderness, where he fasted and where Satan tempted him.

The ashes are prepared by burning palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. On Palm Sunday, churches bless and hand out palm branches to attendees, a reference to the Gospelsโ€™ account of Jesusโ€™ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when onlookers lay palm branches on his path.

When we come forward to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, we are saying that we are sorry for our sins, and that we want to use the season of Lent to correct our faults, purify our hearts, control our desires and grow in holiness so we will be prepared to celebrate Easter with great joy.

With this focus on our own mortality and sinfulness, Christians can enter into the Lent season solemnly, while also looking forward in greater anticipation and joy of the message of Easter and Christโ€™s ultimate victory over sin and death.

OUR LADY OF PEACE, PRAY FOR UKRAINE.

We pray that your intercession may protect all the people in Ukraine from hated and discord, and direct the heart of the oppressors into the ways of peace and justice which your Son taught and exemplified. We ask your maternal care for our Holy Father who works to reconcile the nations in peace.

LET US PRAY FOR PEACE

Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine has already begun. May
we entrust the situation to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and appeal to political leaders to spare no effort to seek out peace through prayers.

PRAYER FOR PEACE
โ€”St. John Paul II

Immaculate Heart of Mary, help us to conquer the menace of evil, which so easily takes root in the hearts of the people of today, and whose immeasurable effects already weigh down upon our modern world and seem to block the paths toward the future.

From famine and war, deliver us. From nuclear war, from incalculable self-destruction, from every kind of war, deliver us. From sins against human life from its very beginning, deliver us.

From hatred and from the demeaning of the dignity of the children of God, deliver us. From every kind of injustice in the life of society, both national and international, deliver us.

From readiness to trample on the commandments of God, deliver us. From attempts to stifle in human hearts the very truth of God, deliver us.

From the loss of awareness of good and evil, deliver us. From sins against the Holy Spirit, deliver us.

Accept, O Mother of Christ, this cry laden with the sufferings of all individual human beings laden with the sufferings of whole societies. Help us with the power of the Holy Spirit conquer all sin: individual sin and the โ€œsin of the world,โ€ sin in all its manifestations.

Let there be revealed once more in the history of the world the infinite saving power of the redemption: the power of merciful love. May it put a stop to evil. May it transform consciences. May your Immaculate Heart reveal for all the light of hope. Amen.

'LOVE YOUR ENEMIES'โ€”LUKE 6:27

Jesus has a good reminder for all of us in the Gospel reading todayโ€” to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us. It may be one of the most difficult thing to fulfill most especially in these trying times, but this is what actually means to be a Christian. But loving them doesn't mean that we are also tolerating their bad behaviors. Because constructive criticisms and pointing out mistakes are also form of showing love to people.

But I think, the best revenge that we could show to them is no revenge at all. Pray for them instead. Because only in prayers that we can show them our love, and offer them the forgiveness that they never came to ask for.

: THE CHURCH'S YOUNGEST NON-MARTYR SAINTS

Tomorrow, February 20, the Church will commemorate the celebration of the Two Shepherd Children of Fatima, Saints Francisco and Jacinta Marto. These sweet siblings were normal kids: mischievous, known to pout โ€ฆ but greatly in love with Mary and her Son. But did you know that they are the youngest non-martyr children to have been canonized.

Francisco and Jacinta: little shepherd children, siblings, who saw Our Lady as the world was in the midst of World War I, who were canonized by Pope Francis during his trip to Fatima 100 years after the apparitions.

Francisco was the tenth of 11 children. In her memoirs, Lucia described him as having exemplary obedience to his parents, Olimpia and Manuel Marto, and as being patient, kind, reserved and inclined to silence. He avoided arguments, able to accept losing at games or even giving in, in order to avoid conflict. He liked nature and music. Nevertheless, he was a normal boy, inclined to mischief: He was known to drop inedible objects in his sleeping brotherโ€™s mouth!

He couldnโ€™t hear Our Lady during the apparitions, but in her appearance, she said he would go soon to heaven, though he had to pray many rosaries first. He died April 4, 1919, of the flu epidemic that passed through Europe in 1918 and following.

It is said that one day, two people asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up:

โ€œDo you want to be a carpenter,โ€ one asked. โ€œNo maโ€™am,โ€ he replied. A soldier, a doctor, a priest, they went on asking, with Francisco answering no to each suggestion. โ€œSo then, what do you want to be?โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t want to be anything. I want to die and go to heaven,โ€ he replied.

Francisco suffered humiliation because of having seen Our Lady. At school, some made fun of him, including his teacher, who did not believe in God. But Francisco didnโ€™t complain about this, as Mary had told the little shepherds that they would suffer a lot, but that Godโ€™s grace would be their consolation.

Two days before his death, Francisco was able to receive his First Communion. He told little Jacinta, โ€œToday, I am happier than you because I have Jesus in my heart.โ€

The day of his death, around 10 am, he told his mother: โ€œLook Mama, that beautiful light by the door!โ€

He was just a boy of 10, but just as Our Lady had said, she would come for him. He died April 4, 1919.

Jacinta was born two years after Francisco. Lucia described her as full of life and joy, but she was also known to be a bit prone to pouting and it wasnโ€™t too hard to make her irritated if she didnโ€™t get her way. Like her brother, however, there was a notable spiritual sensitivity in her: The Marto family home was characterized by great devotion and faith.

The children said the Rosary every day after lunch, but to make more time for play, they shortened it to the words โ€œOur Fatherโ€ at the beginning of each decade, followed by โ€œHail Maryโ€ 10 times. This was before Our Ladyโ€™s appearances changed them into children of tremendous devotion and sacrifice.

Lucia said that it was Jacinta who received especially a great abundance of grace from Our Lady, and great knowledge of God and virtue.

She would say, โ€œI love Our Lord and the Virgin Mary so much that I never get tired of telling them I love them.โ€

Jacinta and Francisco got sick in the same flu outbreak of 1918, but she died a year after him, after a long month of suffering. During this period, Our Lady again appeared. Jacinta explained: Our Lady came to see us and she said that soon she will come to get Francisco to bring him to heaven.

One time she said to her mother, โ€œOh Mama โ€ฆ do you see Our Lady of the Cova da Iria?โ€

She died alone on February 20, 1920, at age 9. Their feast is marked on the anniversary of Jacintaโ€™s death, February 20.

GO TO CHURCH ANYWAY

If you're having s*x before marriage, go to church anyway.

If you are a drug addict trying to beat addiction, go to church anyway.

If you were out drunk all night the night before, go to church anyway.

If you aren't sure what gender you prefer, go to church anyway.

If you can't quit that disgusting habit, go to church anyway.

CHURCH is a HOSPITAL for the BROKEN, LOST, EMPTY, CONFUSED, DESPERATE, and REJECTED.

Every sinner has a future, and every saint has a past.

How do we break the chains of addiction and bo***ge?
By prayer...

There isn't a single person in the 4 walls of the church that doesn't have something they hate or regret about their past.

We've all made mistakes and will continue to,
BUT His Grace is enough.

There are things that I'd never want to admit out loud about myself, but God knows.
And He loves me nonetheless. Repentance is not when you cry, but when you change.

So whatever you've done, whatever you're doing,
whatever you will do...
it might just change your life if...
YOU GO TO CHURCH ANYWAY.

CHURCH FACTS | The Sacrament of Baptism

The sacrament of Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in its mission: โ€œBaptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.โ€ The Greek word baptizein means to plunge or to immerse, and whether we are literally immersed in water or the water is poured upon us, the water symbolizes the burial with Christ of the catechumen.

Condemnation will make a story in your head.

"Angay pa ba kang paminawon?"
"Makasasala man kayo ka"

Let that condemnation disappear by starting to talk to God.
