22 September 2024 marks the beginning of the Autumnal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and Vernal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. During equinoxes, the day and night are each approximately 12 hours long. Tomorrow, the Sun will rise at 5:45 AM and will set at 5:53 PM. The time discrepancy is caused by atmospheric refraction enabling us to observe the sun minutes before it actually rises and sets.

Why are the kernels in corncobs different colours?
The explanation lies in how different genes are expressed. These corncobs were part of Barbara McClintock's studies on genetics and "jumping genes". She showed that parts of the corn's genetic code can shift from one place to another within its chromosomes. This is why corn kernels have different colours.
It took time before McClintock's discoveries were widely accepted, but since then, they have had a revolutionary effect on the field of genetics.
Barbara McClintock was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

While nearly all metals can actually be recycled, there are some that are recycled best in the current systems. This highlights the greater potential contribution of metals, like nickel, in creating a circular economy and reducing the need to extract more minerals from the Earth.
Recycling metal is crucial for a sustainable future! By reusing aluminum, steel, and copper, we reduce the need for mining, conserve natural resources, and cut down on energy use. Metal recycling also lowers greenhouse gas emissions and keeps valuable materials out of landfills.
Every can, pipe, or wire you recycle helps protect the environment and support a circular economy. Let's make a difference, one metal item at a time!
